CUFF-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,078, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed August 26, 1895. Serial No. 560,509- (NO model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OSMAN LYMAN HAVEN and CHARLES EDGAR SMITH, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form ing a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to cuff-holders, and the object thereof is to provide an effective device of this class which may be easily and readily connected with the sleeve of a shirt or the wristband thereof, and with which a cufi? may also be readily connected, the construction and arrangement being such that the relative position of the cuff with reference to the sleeve may be adjusted when desired,
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved cuff-holder, showing the manner of connecting the same with a sleeve of a shirt and with a cuff, each of the latter being shown in.section; Fig. 2, a plan view of the holder, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the practice of our invention we employ a holder, comprising two springoperated plates A and B, the inner surfaces of which are provided at opposite points with semicircular recesses or notches a and Z), said inner surfaces or edges being held parallel with each other and at a. short distance apart by means of an open springring C, each of the ends of which is connected with one of the bars or plates A in any desired manner and as shown in Fi The plate B is provided at its free end with a transverse projection or shoulder D, and formed therein is a transverse slot (1, adapted to receive a lug or projection E, formed on or secured to the plate A, and connected with each of the plates A and B at a and Z) is a spring F, which operates to clamp or draw the ends of the plates or bars A and B together.
Formed on the upper side of one of the plates or bars, preferably the plate I is a pin or projection G, and secured to said plate is a button 11, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanyin g drawin In Fig. 1, K represents a portion or section of the shirt-sleeve, the wristband of which is" provided with the usual buttonhole 7e, and L represents the cuff. In attaching the cuff to the sleeve the button M, which constitutes the usual wristband-button, is passed through the slot between the bars or plates A and I3, and the shank thereof is normally held in one of the spaces formed by the semicircular notches or recess a and b, and the button II is passed through one of the buttonholes of the cuff in the usual manner, and the position of the cuffand the holder may be regulated at any time by simply sliding the latter f0rward or back by means of the handle formed by the spring 0 or the cuff, in which operation the shank of the button M will pass from one of the chambers formed by the semicircular notches or recesses a and 1) into another, as will be readily understood. In this operation the pin or projection G serves as a rest or support for the cuff and prevents the end thereof from striking the head of the button M when the holder is moved from one point to another, and it will thus be seen that we accomplish the object of our invention by means of adevice which is simple in construction and operation and one which is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.
The operation of the spring-handle C, and also of the spring F, is to hold the plates or bars A and I3 close together or sufficiently so for all practical purposes, and the operation of the pin or projection E, which passes through the slot d, is to prevent too great a movement of these parts or too great a spread thereof, the spring F also serving to draw the plates or bars together, as will be readily understood.
Having fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a cuff-holder, the combination of two parallel spring-operated plates provided with a spring-handle as 0, one of said plates be ing provided with a button by means of which the cuff is connected therewith, and the adjacent edges of said plates being provided with semicircular notches or recesses adapted to receive a button connected with the wristband of a shirt-sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a cuff-holder, the combination of two spring-operated plates held parallel with and adjacent to each other, said plates being provided with an open spring-ring handle, at one end and one of said plates being provided with a projection at the other end which extends across the opposite plate, said projection being provided with a transverse slot through which passes a pin connected with said opposite plate, a spring by which the OSMAN LYMAN HAVEN. CHARLES EDGAR SMITH.
