SPECIFICATION.

Be it known that I, JOHN M. JOHNSON, of the city, county, and State of New York,` havemade a new and 1 useful Improvement in Button Fastenings; and I do hereby' declare the following to be` a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enableeothers skilled in tlic art to make and use the same, reference being:

My invention consists in the 'arrangement of a spear or T-shapcd shank, one or both ends of whose trans-` verse part are provided with aspur at right angles thereto, in combiriation with abutton whose collet is provided i with a. slot to admit the head oi' the shank, said collet having upon-its inner sides and at an angle to,v the slot` a depression on the one side and a hole through vthe collet on the other, or a hole on both sides, so that when` the C shank is introduced through the collet and the button partially rotated or slid, as in `figs. 4 and G, the hook or hooks" will readily engage in the hole's,'and thus securely fasten the two parts together. A spring of India rubber, or other suitable material, may be interposed between the cloth and button, to more securely hold the parts in position, though the fabric will usually serve the same purpose. To detach the button it is only niecessary to press the button against the stud and slightly turn it or slide it out.`

depressed on one side, with a hole and depression on the other, as shown at c, iig. 1,01*` it may have a hole and i depression on either'side, as shown at f f; iig. 3, Vso that when the button is turned after` the entrance of thestud the shoulder and hook of the latter rest in the depressions and holes of thehutton, or` thebutton may `have a T-shapedopening with a groove and hole in one side, as shown at g,iig. 6, or i't may have a hole and depression" in either side, as shown at 'h la, fig. 4. In order to release the buttonit i is only necessary topress it against the stud and turn it slightly, 'as shown `in figs. 3`and 5, or moveitiout, whist pressing, as shown inl iigs. 4 and 6. By this arrangement a button can be readily fastened to a garment or ether article without the aid of any other in strnment,and can be readily `detached therefrom The stud, i wher properly introduced into the button, is not liable to become detached spontaneously. The fastening can be nade very cheap, it is durable, and its operation is so simple that it can be readilyunderstood by the aiui-` ples mind.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
