Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.G
JEROME N. B. JAQUITH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
CATCH-FASTENING FOR BREAST-PINS, EAR-RINGS, 81.0.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 45.0114, dated November 15, 1864.
To all whom t may 0071.067072,.-
Beit known that I, JEROME N. B. J AQUTTH, of Boston, in the county ot Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Catch or Fastening for Breast-Pins, Shawl-Pins, Ear-Rings, and Similar Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will ena-ble those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccilication, in Which- Figure 1 is a section of a shawl-pin provided with a fastening constructed according to my invention, a: a', Fig. 4, indicating the line of section; Figs. 2 and 3, a section ofthe same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 4; Fig. 4, an inner side view of the same.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to obtain a fastening forbreastpins, shawlpins, ear-rin gs, and similar articles that cannot become casually unfastened or unclasped by pickpockets or thieves, and which will at the same time be simple in construction and capable of being very readily unfastened in a legitimate Way.
A represents a shawl-pin, which may be constructed in any of the known forms, and B is the pin proper, which is secured to the head or body a by means of a hinge or joint, b, as usual. To the inner side of the head or body a (the same side to which the pin B is attached) there is a short projection, c, extend ing at right angles from a and having two slots,
l 2, made in it at right angles with each other, the slot l being in line with the pin B. In the slot 2 of c there is secured, by a pivot, d, a catch, O, which is a small dat plate having a slot, e, made in it, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The pivot d passes through the lower end of one side ofthe catch O and projection c, and when the pin B is shoved down in the slot l of the projection c and the catch C is turned over in line with c, as shown in Fig. 2, the pin B will be firmly secured and fastened. The elasticity of the pin Will cause it to bear against the upper edge of the slot e, and the pin cannot be detached or moved out from the projection c Without turning over the catch, as shown in Fig. 3, and in order to turn the catch O the pin B must first be pressed down or toward the body a. In order to facilitate the turning of the catch O, it is provided with a knob,f, at its outer end for the thumb-nail to press against.
The whole arrangement is extremely simple and efficient, forming a secure fastening, and one which may be cheaply constructed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Y A fastening for breast-pins, shawl-pins, earrings, and like articles, composed of the pin B, slotted projection c, and catch O, all constructed and arranged in the manner substantially as herein shown and described.
JEROME N. B. JAQUITH.
