E. T. BARNUM, OF VATERBRY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. T. BARNUM, ot' lll/'ater-v bury, in the county ot' New Haven and State ot' Connecticut, have invented a new and usei'ul Improvement in Buttons; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part-ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is an under-side View ot the button without the Washer. Fig. 2 is an under-side view ot'the button applied to a piece ot' cloth. Fig. 3 is an underside view ot` the washer. Fig. et is a side View, partly in section, ot' the button, showing it applied to a piece ot' cloth.

This invention consists ot' an improved article ot' manufacture, to wit :Ik a button which is attached to a garment by means ot' a washer iu the manner described.
A designates the plate ot a button. In this example it is made otsquare outline; butit may be made ot' circular form, and semi-spherical on top, it' desired. C designates its shank, on the end ot' which I form a cross-bar, c. B is an elastic-cushion, whose office is twofold: First,it protects the cloth from becomiugworn by contact with the plate or body of the button; and, second, itacts as a spring to hold the cloth against the washer. B( is a Washer ot' metal or other suitable material. It is slotted at ato permit the cross-bar to pass through it, and it has also a groove, b, made across it at right angles to the slot.
The butt-on thus made is applied to a garment in the following manner: A small orifice is made in the garment sufficiently large to permit the cross-bar c to be inserted diagoually through it. The under side of the body of the button and the cloth will then be separated by the elastic cushion B, which, in this example, I have made ot' rubber. The Washer B is next placed againstthe under side ot' the cloth D, with its slot a in line with the bar c, and force is used to drive the bar through the slot, when thejvasher is turned through onequarter ot"`acircl'e,`so as to bring the bar into articulation with the groove'b, in which,it`
rests and remains secure, being held therein by the tension ofthe elastic cushion B.
