TO ALL WHOM T MAY CONGERN;
Beit known that I, Jenn JENK, et the city and countyot Washington, in the District e-f Columbia, have invented'ra new and useful linprovenientvin Buttons; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,w`hicli are made apart ofv thisspeeitieation, andin which-*- v A Figure 1 is a central section of a button, as applied to the garment illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is a central section of a button illustrating a modiiication.
Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views, 'hereinafter specifically referred to.
Similar letters of reference indica-te corresponding parts in the several figures.
In the button which forms the subject of this invention a shouldered shank has secured upon one of'its ends a dish or other *latwally-projecting fixture, and receives the head of the buttonafter being inserted through the garment at the desired 4point of attachment. The present improvement,consists in the means whereby the head of the button is retained upon the end of-the shank.
In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe-it in. detail. i
In the` drawings, a represents a rigid shank of metal or other suitable material, and Ii is a disk or bar fixed upon the end thereof, by riveting or otherwise. Figs. 3 and si are top views, the former representing a flat piece or bar, and the latter a disk as applied to the end of the shanka. The other end of the shank a may be `formed with a barb or otherwise ada )ted to ienctrate the cloth, or'itma be formed with a hemis herieal head l l Y P i as shown i'n iig. 7; in any case it has essentiallya shoulder', a .A' c represents the metallic or other covering for vthe head of the button. l is the filling of the button-head, and c is the back plate thereof. Between the iilling and the back plate is confined a diaphragm, f, 'which may be a disk of rubber, leather, cloth, or analogous material, and which, if preferred, maybe provided with a seat in the 'inner side of the hack plate e, as shown in lig. 'l'. An aperture, g, square or circular, extends through the back plate e, as 'seen in figs. 8 and 9, vand saidapert-ure extends into the filling Z of the buttonshead, as shown in figs. l and 2. Inv constructing the button,
an incision simply, as ,shown in iig. 5, or ,two incisions, in the form of a cross, as in g. 6, may be made in the `centre ofthe diaphragm but those incisions are only necessary when` ther end of the shank is blunt, inasmuch as a pointed shank will` make the necessary opening in the diaphragm when the button-head-is applied. The office of the diaphragm is obvious. The shank ft is passed through the cloth, and the disk or vfixture Zz pressed snugly upa'gainst the inner surface. The, hutton-head e d e is then applied' to the extremity of' the-shank a, which projects from the outer surface ot'k the cloth. The shank a enters the aperture g of the hutten-head, the head of the shank being adapted to penetrate the diaphragm f, as before sta-ted. As soon as the head of ,the shank is fairly introduced into the imtton-head, the diaphragm f closes about the shank and upon the shoulder a', and ciectually prevents the withdrawal of the shank from the hutton-head- The button is intended for permanent application, and the herein-described means for attaining the desired' end are believed to be more simple, cheap, and eiicetive than those heretofore devised. An additional shoulder,`
a2, may, if desired, be formed upon the shank (i for vthe purpose of clamping a washer, a3, against the back plate of the buttnmhead, as shown in iig. 2, in order to give firmness and stcadiness to the button when applied.
Having 'thus described my invention, the following iswhat I 'claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
I claim the diaphragm f, confined within the head of a hmmm-substantially as described, and employed in 4connection with theshonldered shank et and disk or ixed piece l, in the manner and for the lpurpose set fortln JOHN JENK.
