BOTH CF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,064, dated February 9, 1886.
Application filed September 18, 1885. Serial No. 177,432. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, NoYEs F. PALMER, of Jamaica, Queens county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Button,
of which the following specification is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a button the head of which may be reversed so as to present either face to the front.
The invention consists in the elements of improvement hereinafter more, fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central section of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a similar section of the head; Fig. 3,
a sectional side view of the shank and nut. Figs. 4 and 5 show similar views of modifications of the shank.
With particular reference to Figs. l, 2, and 2o 3, the letter a represents the head of a button made of any desirable outline. One face of this button is provided with a metallic or other cap or covering, b, which at its edge is lapped over the edge of head a, so as to be securely held in place. The head a is perforated centrally from end to end, and the eapb is also centrally perforated, the perforation of head a being internally screw-threaded for the reception of a screw-threaded shank, c, which 3o is of a length to extend entirely through the head and cap. At one end this shank c is adapted to be secured to the garment. For
this purpose it is made in one piece with a hanged piece, d, having screw e, which is embraced by a nut, f. The screw e is thrust through the garment and the nut is then applied. It will be seen that as the shank c extends from end to end of the head its end will be Hush with the face of the button, so that one continuous face is represented. If it is desired to reverse the button, so as to display the opposite side, the head is unscrewed, turned around, and reapplied to the shank. In this Way the appearance of the button may be readily changed.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 shows the piece d to be made with an internally-screwthreaded bore for the reception of a screw on the thumb nutf.
In Fig. 5 the screwshank c has an eye, g, for sewing it direct to the garment.
I do not claim to have invented a buttonhead perforated from end to end for the reception of a screw-shank, as such a button is shown in Patent No. 28,587, granted to S. Krom, June 5, 1860; but
I do claim- The combination of centrally perforated head a with the centrally-perforated cap b, lapped over the edge of head a, and covering one face thereof, and with the shank c and its securing or attaching means, the whole oonstructed to constitute a reversible button, sub- Stantially as specified.
NOYES F. PALMER.
