Description
@ffice a ELONZO S, WHEELER, O W'ESTPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO E.- WHEELER, OF SAME PLACE.
HIMSELF AND J.
Letters Patent No. 85,976, dated Jauuwry 19, 1869.
IMPRO'V'ED CARRIAGE-KNOB.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'ma/J concern:
Be it known that I, ELONZO S. WHEELER, of Westport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Carriage- Knobs; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings andthe letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specication, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of the knob attached to the leather or top covering;
Figure 2, a central section of the same enlarged;
Figures 3, 4 and 5, central sections, the parts detached;
Figure 6, a side view of the knob as constructed for attachment to the wood portion of the carriage;
Figure 7, a central section of the same enlarged; and inv Figures 8 and 9, central sections of the parts detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in the article known to the trade as carriage-knobs; that is, knobs used upon carriages for securing the covering or curtain.
Heretofore buckles have been employed where attachment was made to the leather or covering.
The object of my invention is to construct a knob n which may be attached either to the leather or wood.
To this end,
The invention consists in forming upon the hollow shank a head and neck. The shank attached to the' head, and passing through the neck, and leather, is headed down upon a washer upon'the opposite side of the head or covering, or the shank and head are xed in like manner to a nail for the purpose of insertion into the wood.
To enable others to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the head, formed from sheet-metahand secured to a hollow shank, B, as seen in g. 3, by the interposition of a lining-plate, b.
The neck, as seen in iig. 4, is formed from sheetmetal into a base, C, and hollow body D, and so as to pass on to the hollow shank B, as seen in g. 2, the sha-nk B being of sufcient length to extend through the covering, where a washer or head, E, denoted in' g. 5, is placed on to the shank, and the metal of the shank turned down by a depression made in the centre of the head E, as seen in iig. 2,
If for attachment to the wood, I place within the head A, and passing through the hollow shank B, a
nail, G; then pass the neck over the nail and hollow shank, as seen in fig. 7, and turn the edges of the shank down on to the under side of the base which secures the neck, knob, and nail all together. v Th ese knobs, though designed especially for carriagework, itwill be seen are equally applicable to other purposes. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
A carriage-knob, constructed in the manner substantially as herein described, as an article of manufacture.
ELONZO S. WHEELER.
