Description

WILLIAM E. SPARKS.
Improvement in Knobs for PictureNail'sp No. 118,400. i i PatentedAug. 22,1871.
` l A57/iw@ f UNITED STATES PATENT QEFICE.
WILLIAM E. SPARKS, OE NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGN OR TO SARGENT 8U OO., OE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOBS FOR PICTURE-NAILS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,400, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SPARKS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Picture-Knobs; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in
Figure l, a side view of the knob complete, with the screw inserted; Fig. 2, a front View of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same; and in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the three parts of the knob detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in the article of manufacture known to the trade as picture-knobs; the object being to construct the knob of cast metal; and consists in forming the knob in three parts set together so as to form an internal support to each other, and all secured by a screw or nail, which is passed through them to iix the knob to the wall or whatever may be desired.
A is the base, B the neck, and G the head of the knob. The base is constructed with a central projection, a, and the smaller end of the neck B constructed to set on over the said projection, thus forming a support to fix the position of the neck upon the base. The head C is cast with an internal shoulder or recess, cl, to receive the larger end of the neck D and govern the position lof the head, as seen in Fig. 3. The neck is represented as set over the projection on the base, and the cap constructed to set over the larger end of the neck.
This construction may, if preferred, be reversed, the smaller end of the neck setting into a corresponding recess in the base instead of over the projection, as shown, and the same may be said of the head on the larger end of the neck.
A perforation is made through the head and base for the insertion of the screw or nail D, by which the parts of the knob are secured together and to place, as desired.
By this construction the knob is formed hollow, and the face of the knob and base may be ornamented in the process of casting; or, if the parts be made of sheet metal struck up in suitable dies, it may also be ornamented.
I do not wish to be understood as myself to any particular material for struction of the knob; but
I claim as my invention- A knob, consisting :of the parts A B C, con structed as described, so that each part forms a support for the other to retain it in position, and so as to be secured together by a screw or nail confin in g the conwhich passes through the parts, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM E. SPARKS.
