' Letters Patent No. 89,487, dated April 27, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN `WHIPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, GAMALIEL KING, of Westfield, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whips; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention consists in an improvement in the formation and insertion of the loading of a Whip; and
The nature of this improvement consists in forming the bar of metal that -gives weight'to the but of the whip or loads it, and the cap or extreme end of the whip, of one piece of metal, so that the whip will be much stronger than the loaded whip .made in the ordinary manner, and be much simpler and cheaper in construction. Y
The most common way of loading whip-stocks is to have a long wedge of iron or other metal, over which is brought the rattan or reed forming the stiiening of the handle, in four pieces, conforming on their inside surfaces to the flat sides of the wedge, and making, on their outside, a cylindrical surface.
Over the large end of the wedge, and over the ends of these four pieces of/rattan, is placed a hollow cap, with or without a shoulder on it. Over this all is then plaited or woven the thread or covering of the whip, the button coming against the shoulder of the cap or over it, and holding it on only by the strength of the covering.
In construction, I form my device as follows:
The cylindrical bolt A and cap B are cast in one piece, out of any metal mostconveuieut, the bolt A having grooves or threads cut in itat right angles to the direction of the bolt and at regular distances, for the purpose of being filled wit-h the 'glue which holds it in place in the stock.
Upon the neck of the cap, and at its end farthest4 from the bolt, is a raised projection, b, running around the cap, for the button of the covering to come against.
In making a loaded whip with this device, the stock of the whip O has a hole bored in the wood sufliciently large to let in the bolt A easily. lThe bolt is then inserted with glue, which, when it harde-ns iu place, holds the bolt in the iirmest manner.' The neck of the cap comes ush against'the end of the wooden stock, and the covering is plaited over, the button resting over the raised shoulder b, the whole process being of the simplest kind, and there being no possibility of the loading of the whip being deranged, even if the plaiting of the covering became loosened, while in the whip made in the ordinary manner, if the cap is not of metal, the accidental fall of the whip is apt to break any ivory or bone cap, and in metal ones, if it comes 0H', as is frequently the case, the Wedge comes out and the whip goes to pieces.
The cap of my device may be plaited, or otherwise ornamented, so as to improve the general appearance of the whip.
It may also be made without the projection b where a cheaper cap is desired to be made.
Now, having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the grooved bolt A with the cap B, having the shoulder b, and cast in one piece of metal, for the purpose shown and described.
