IMPROVEMENT IN CARRlAGE-POLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,] 79, dated August 14, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. PAINTER, of West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Carriage-Poles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawin gs and the letters of reference marked thereon, to beafull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in carriage-poles designed to prevent the saggin g of the pole, as also to increase its strength, and whereby the pole may be made. much lighter in its appearance; and my invention consists in placing a metal bar in a groove formed on the under side of the pole and extending nearly or quite its entire length.

To enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A is the pole, of ordinary form. Upon its under side I form a groove to receive a flat bar, B, which said bar extends nearly or quite the length of the pole. At intervals pins C are passed through to secure the bar into the pole, as seen in Fig. 2.

D, the tip, of common construction, is placed on over the end of the pole, covering the end 7 HENRY NV. PAINTER.
