UNITED STATES PAT NT OEEIoE.
JOHN PFEIFER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED HANDLE FOR COAL-SHOVEL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 57,759, dated September 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J oHN PFEIFER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Coal-Shovel; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification Figure 1 being a bottom view of the improved coal-shovel; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, with a central longitudinal section of the Wooden handle; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the handle in a plane indicated by the line as m, Fig. 2.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
Ooalshovels with the ordinary wooden handles, reaching close up to the blade, very soon have their handles burned oil or so shrunk by the heat as to get loose and frequently come off; and when the shank is loose in the handle it turns therein, so that it is diflicult to keep the shovel rightside up in using.
My improvement obviates these defects.
I make the handle with a slender iron neck, B, substantially as shown, then a shoulder, d, for the wooden handle D to abut against, and finally, terminating in a shank, G, which passes through the Wooden handle. The shank may be riveted in the handle as at g.
In addition to this construction, there are projections or vanes f f on the sides of the shank 0, near the shoulder d and under the ferrule hof the handle, substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These vanes keep the handle D steady, and prevent its turning on the shank.
This construction not only effects the purposes proposed, but keeps the hands farther from the heat of the coal, and at the same time makes a light shovel.
To render the shovel-bladeAfirm and strong and yet light, there may be corrugations a a a therein.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction of the handle with the metallic neck B, shoulder d, and vanes ff, in combination with the wooden handle D, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
The above specification of my improved coal-shovel signed by me this 15th day of February, 1866.
