Description

@uitrit tstrs geteld @frn WALTER D WOODS, OF BENNINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNORITO HIMSELF AND EBENEZER- F. WOODS, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 82,779, dated October 6, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUTLERY.
TO ALL PERSONSATO WHOM THESEPRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. WOODS, of Bennington, in the county-of'Hillsboro, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful, Improvement in Table-Cutlery; and do hereby declare the same to he fully described in the following specification, and representeduin the-accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a side View,
Figures 2 and 3 are longitudinal sections, and Y Figures 4 and-5am transverse sections of a fork, having its handle, shank, and holsters formed and applied together in accordance with my invention.l l
The planes of section-oi` figs. 2 and 3 are to he supposed to be at right angles, and through the axis of the handle. Those of ligs. f1 and 5 are transverse to the said axis, fig. 4 being at the dotted line a Zz, and fig. 5
-Incarrying ont my invention, I connect the tang of the arti-cle of cutlery, whether such article -he a knife or a fork, to the handle, and at the same time form the bolster,\as well as other parts, hy means of casting metal into and on the handle and tang while both are in a matrix or mould.
In the'specicction of Letters Patent, No. 63,598, I described a mode of connecting thehandle and tang of,
an article of cutlery, by metal cast on the two when laid in a matrix, the bolster being formed by such metal, which at the same time was cast along hoth'the outer edges and around the end of the handle, and constituted what is termed an encompassing lining. t
In my present invention this lining is dispensed with, and the handle is formed tubular, o1'. with a bore or passage extending through it axially, in order that the metal while being cast in the mould mayow entirely through and ill such bore or passage, and form and connect holsters at both ends of the handle. l l
Y I also vforni within such handle, and for reception of the tang of the blade or fork, a chamber,.having a transverse section greater in area than that of the tang, the same being so as to enable the Ametal to liiil entirely around the tang, and form a socket for supporting it on all sides.
Furthermore, I forni transversely through the handle, and from the -hore thereof, one or more passages, which may be cylindrical. or, what is better, may he conical'in opposite directions, the purpose of eachof such passages being to form thc metal, which while being cast will enter and fill them, substitutes for rivets going Athrough the handle, to prevent it from cracking or splitting, or, in other words, to strengthen it.
In the drawings- A denotes a fork, of which o represents the tang, the whole being stamped or formed of sheet metal. B is the handle, which may be of wood, ivory, hone, or other suitable material.
f This handle is exhibited in longitudinal sections in Figures 6 and T, and in transverse sections in Figures 'S and 9. A
The bore of the handle is shown atf, the tang-socket chamber heilig represented at g, and the rivet-forming passage being seen :it 7i. Furthermore, cach end of the'handle,A I usually bevel in manner as shown at I The tang has a hole, lc, through-'it when it is to he covered by the front bolster, C. Such tang also has another hole, l, made through it, in line with the rivet-passage of the handle.
'.lhe purpose of' these holes is to enable' the. metal to pass through and fill them, and thereby aid in securing the tang in place.
D denotes therear bolster; E, the connection formedby the metal east in the bore of the handle; m and n represent the metal cast through the holes in the tang o o. VThe metal cast into the rivet-holes of the-handle p is the metal cast .in thechamher g to form the socket for supporting the tang. All the metal cast into the handleand against its ends, when set', is in one piece.
*After lbeing so cast, it will be seen only at the ends of the handle, and at what may be termed rivet-holes,
whereas, in my mode of connecting the handle and' the tang, as described in the aforesaid patent, the metal is shown as lining the handle on its opposite edges, i
I do not herein `claim to connect a knife or fork-handle to the tang of its blade by metal cast on the two.
I herein make no claim to any invention described in Letters Patent, No. 27,790, dated April 10, 1860. My invention differs therefrom in having a passage extending entirely through the handle, and with the metal cast through such passa-ge, and also in the ends of the handle, so as to form holsters. i v
Furthermore, I am aware ofthe subject of the patent, No. 57,521, dated August 28, 1866. My invention differs from that in various particulars: First, the metal for forming and connecting the holsters is not cast or founded in a. handle, but has simple plates of wood, ivory, or other substances riveted on its opposite sides, the metal extending through or to the opposite edges ofthe handle, but in my handleithe metal is cast therein on the tang, and so as to go entirely through the handle, and form holsters at its opposite ends, without going through or to the opposite edges of the handle.
What I do claim as my present invention or improvements, is as follows:
I claim the handle B, made tubular throughout its length, and having the connection-piece E of the two holsters arranged in thebore of such handle, as specified.
I also claim the handle as made with the tang-socket chamber g, arranged in it in manner, and to open out of its upper end, and with a passage, f, extended from such chamber to the rear of the handle, as set forth.
I also claim, in combination with the chamber or socket-mould y, formed in the handle, as set forth, the metallic bolster C and tang-supporter 77, cast in one piece in and against the handle, and on the tang, as set forth.
I also claim the combination of the rivet-projection passage L of the handle B with the bore f g thereof, as set forth. l
And in combination with thehandle Band its metallic holsters C D and their connection E, when cast in one piece in the handle, as described, I claim the rivet-projecting moulding-passage ofthe handle, and the metal o cast therein, and'in one piece with the connection E, as specified.
I also claim the combination of the rear tang-hole l with the metallic extension n, the rivet-projection c, and its moulding passage L ofthe handle B, as set forth.
I also claim the handle as formed tubular throughout, or from end to end, and with the two holsters and their metallic connection cast in one piece with respect to such handle, and upon the tang of the blade, the whole being substantially as described.
