Description
@geiten gisten istnt @ffice WALTER l). WOODS, OF BENNINGTON, NEW HAIMIPSIIIRE, SSIGNOE TO HIMSELF AND EBENEZER E. WOODS, OE THE SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 63,593, lated April 2, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE GUTLEEY.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM II-IESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. WOODS, of Bennington, in the county of Hillsboro, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table Cutlery', and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side view of a table knife with its handle and blade made and constructed in accordance with my invention, which is equally applicable to the manufacture of forks, steels, and various other articles of table cutlery.
-Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of it.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken through the handle.
Figure 4 is a side View ot' the blade and its tangas separate from the handle.
Figure 5 is an edge view of the Wooden part or body of the handle.
In carrying out my invention I combine the wooden part of the handle with the blade, by casting on the said wooden part and tang of the blade a mass of metal, which shall encompass the said Wooden part on its edges and ends, and form a bolster to embrace the tang. Such metallic part I also usually cause to pass through the t'ang, that is, through a hole made transversely through it. The Itang may be formed with one or more notches in one or each of its opposite edges, the same being to receive the metal cast upon it, and thus connect the two together, so as to prevent the tang from being drawn out of the handle, of which the metallic covering is to form a part.
In further carrylng out my lnvention, I employ a mould suitably made to form the handle, and I place within the mouldthe tang of the blade, and also the wooden body of the handle, and I arrange the tang so that it shall project into such body, after which I cast into the mould melted metal, so as to surround the said wooden body on its edges and end, and form a bolster to the handle, as Well as a means of connecting the wooden body to the tang.
In the drawings, A denotes the blade, of which a is the tang, both being stamped or formed of plate steel. The body B of the handle is to be made of u'od, or some other suitable material, on which metal can be cast without material injury to it; and such bo'dy should be constructed with a socket, Zi, to receive the tang a. A hole, e, may be made through the tang a where it is to'be covered by the bolster, the same being so that the metal, whenoastrupo'n the `tang and so as to form the bolster, may flow through such hole and lill it, as seen at d', in iig. 2, the same being in order that when the metal may be in a hardened state, the portion so within the hole may operate to prevent the tang from being separated from the rest of the metal or the handle. The wooden part or body, B, of the handle, I construct with chamfered edges and ends, as shown in gs. 3 and 5, the` same being to aid in keeping the metal lining, C, in connection with such Wooden ,part B. The bolster Vis exhibited at e as constituting part of such metallic lining C. 'If desirablefon'e or more rivets, f, may be put through the part B, or through it and the tang, such being for ornament, as Well as for aiding in fastening the tang to the part B, and preventing the latter from cracking whileiin use.
I claim as my invention, the combination of the blade,.the wooden body B of the handle, and the metallic encompassing lining C, cast on the tang a, and the body B, in manner and so as to form the bolster .substantially as described.
I also claim the extension of the bolster into and through the tang when cast upon it and making part of a metallic lining to encompass the tang and the wooden body of the handle, as explained.
WALTER D. WOODS.
