JAMESV B. STRICKLAND, 0F sonANfroN,l PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 64,922, dated May 2l., 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE lz'KlGl-llilTItICI` this .rgerte refemt tu in time items @anni mit making putt nf the sims.
TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, JAMES B. STRICKLAND, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Eccentric; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, .and exact description thereof, which will enablev those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
This improvement relates to the manner'in which an eccentric is secured to the shaft or axle of a locomotive or other engine, and to the manner in which it may be changed to suit the lead of the engine-valve. And the invention consists in attaching to the axle a collar with a. projecting arm, which arm has a curved slot through it, es will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l. represents e side view showing the collar and arm and two eccentrics on the axle.
Figure 2 is an edge View of the same, it being a. section through the line :c n: of iig. I.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
4 A represents the shaft or axle; B is'the collar; and C is the arm on the collar; D is a curved slot through the arm; E is one of the eccentrics 'which is held in placeA directly bythe arm G; F is the other' eccentric, which is held in place by E; G is a curved slot through the eccentric E. The collar B is tted on to the axle, and fastened against a. shoulder by a key. The projecting arm C, which is one piece with the collar, has a. curved slot through it, 'the curve being a circle, whose centre is the centre of the axle. The eccentric E is fastened .to tbe arm by a bolt, iwhose. head is countersunke Hush with the opposite side oi' the eccentric, and
` which passes through the slot with a, nut on the end which bears against the arm. The ecccntrics are both plain disks of metal tted on to the axle but allowed to turn upon it Whenever it is desired to move or alter them. There is also a curved slot through the eccentric E, and the other eccentric is fastened toE in the same manner that E is fastened to the arm. J represents the bolts by which both eccentrics are fastened, and in the sectional view the manner in which the head is countersunk is plainly shown. vIt will be understood from what has been said that the eccentric-plates E and F een be moved or adjusted as may be desired or to the extent of the slot, andthat they can' be held inposition by the bolts, as before described.
The advantages of this arrangement are man'y, and must be obvious to all who are acquainted with the steam engine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of tbe collar and arm B C, and the eccentrica E F, substantially as herein shown and described for the purposes set forth.
I JAMES B. STRICKLAND.
