SOOVIL S. MERRIAM, OF NEW YORK, N.' Y., ,ASSIGNOR TO .'HIMSELF AND DANIELVW. TALOOTT, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 724,748, dated December 31, 1867.
IMPROVBD WHIP-HANGER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, SCOVIL S. MERRIAM, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented A- Y a new and useful Whip-Hanger g and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description,
ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure I represents a front view, and
Figure II a side view of the whip-hanger.
Figure III is a view of the same from below, looking upwards.
Similar letters represent similar parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of' twolevers, hinged 'upon a common contro, in combination with a stationary wedge, acting upon one end of sadlcvcrs in such a manner that at a certain position the other ends of said levers will be forced together, and thereby pinch the end of the whip between them, and thus support the same. l y
In the accompanying drawing, A is asmallbracket provided with two lugs, a a, through which a pin passes, upon which the levers B B are placed, capable of turning loosely. The lower arms o'r ends of these levers are made of an eccentric shape at their outer circumference, to prevent these levers, by the end 'u of this eccentric part coming in contact with the face of the bracket A, from being pushed further upwards than desirable. The sides of the lower arms or ends vof said levers are chamfered, particularly on their inner sides, between which a wedge-shaped'block, D, is placed, securely fastened to the bracket A. The levers B are connected together by a pin, n, or anyvsimilar contriva-nce capable of allowing a free lateral motion to said levers, but at the same time connecting the levers in such a manner as to cause the same to move or be moved always at the sanno time upwards and downwards in the same plane.
When the whip is required to be hung up, the levers are pushed upwards by the endV of thewhip, and the whip is made to enter between said levers, for which purpose the upper ends of the levers are made to flare or spread outward. By moving the levers B upwards, the lower ends of said levers will come clear of the wedge D, and in consequence of the chamfcred sides of the lower ends, the upper parts of said levers will open suiiiciently to allow the end of the whip to pass between the same, (seo iig. l.) If the whip is now moved down-- wards, or even allowed to fall, the weight ofthe saine will, together with the weight of the upper part of the levers B, cause said levers to move downwards, when the action of wedge-shaped block D against the lower ends of the levers, will force the same apart, and consequently force theupper ends-ot` said levers together, so as to pinch the end of the whip between them, vand hold the same perfectly fast.
- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'.lhe arrangement of two levers', B B, in combination with a wedge-shaped block, D, constructed and operating together in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth and described.
'S. S. MERRIAM.
