TO ALL PERSONS ,TO' WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, CALVIN D. SMITH, of Baldwinsville, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful or improved Rocking or Tilting Chair;` and I do hereby declare the same -to be fully described in the followingl specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Whichi Y I Figure 1 is a side elevation,
:Figure 2 a front view, and
Figure 3 a vertical sectionofit.
From the seat, A, and back, B, ofthe chair, projections C C extend downward and embrace opposite sides or cheeks of a base-frame,vD, which is designed to rest on the door. Each ofthe parts-C C is connected to the base-frameby means of a journal, d, extended from the frame and into the said part 0,; the same being to enable the chair to be tilted on such journal.v A
From the middle of the seat of the chair, a stud, a, projects downward between two vertical arms b which, arranged as represented vin g. 3, are hinged to a bar, e, disposed within- -and extending across the base-frame, longitudinally thereof. Each of these arms is borne against a stop-bar, d', by means of a bow-spring, e, which goes through the two arms, and at its ends is connected with or bears against them, in manner as represented in the drawings. I
The stop-bar ol extends across the base-frame just below the stud a. t
0n tilting the chair, the stud will be alternately carried against thc two arms. Each arm, wlilein motion, will press against andV move the spring at one end, the other end of the spring being supported by the other arm. In this way the spring will be'caused to operate in either direct-ion to great advantage in checking, as well as facilitating thc movements of the chair on or over the base-frame.
I 'claim as my invention, the combination as well asA the arrangement'ot the stud a, the stop-bar d', the two arms b b, and the spring e, as applied to the chair and its supporting-frame D,l and connected together, substan tially as specified.
I also claim the arrangement of the stud a, the 'stop-bar d', the two arms 6 b, and the spring e, with the chair and its supporting-frame D.
CALVIN I). SMITH.
