Description

@uitrit 'tats gettati @fitter JOHN CHATILIJN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters .Patent No. 71,980, dated Decemer 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAST-METAL GASES FOR SPRING-BALANGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, JOHN CHATILLON, of the city,` county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Cast-Metal Case for Spring-Balances; and I do hereby declare that thefollowng is a full, clear, and enact description thereof, which will` enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved case for spring-balances. Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. k Figure 3 is a front view of the ordinary cases now iu use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. v fj This invention relates to a new manner of arranging'the cast-metal cases for spring-balances, so that they \can be made less expensive and simpler than any non' made; and consists in fitting the pin, to which' the upper vend of the spring is secured, directly through Athe upper head of the case, instead of using an additional head in the case for that purpose. Thereby I am enabled to use a shorter case, which will be liable to hold a spring of the samelength as the longer cases with the double upper heads now used; and I consequently economize metal in the manufacture of my cases, which is of great importance, when the great number of spring-balances made is considered. I I A represents a cast-metal case for a spring-balanc e, made of suitable material, and of ordinary shape, but
made without the additional head a, which is used in'the ordinary cases for holding the pin In), as shown in tig. 3. The object of the pin b is tovhold the upperl end of the spring to which the weight is attached. In my improved case, theupper head a is slotted or perforated, and the pin b is inserted from above or from the side of its head, covering the perforation, as is clearly shown in tig. 2. It will be seen, that7 to accommodate a spring ofequal length as that used in the ordinary case, my case need only be as long from end to end as the old caseis from the lower end to the partition a, and thus, the material necessary for the upper part of the ordinary case, is economized in the manufacture of my improved cases. d is the bow or perforated lug, projecting from the upper head c, in theordiuary or in any suitable manner. It will be noticed that my improved case, with both heads and with the lug d, is cast of' one piece.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-v A cast-metal case for spring-balances, when provided with aperforated or slotted upper head for the reception of the pin b, and when made substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.'
