Letters Patent No. 63,425, dated A er 2, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON SEAT.
Be it known that I, EZRA REED, of Owego; in the county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented it new and improved Wagon Seat; and I do hereby declare that the following is it full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the top of" the seat.
Figure 2, an end thereof, when there is no weight or pressure on the seat.
"Figure 3 is an end view, when the seat is sprung down by weight; and
Figure is a transverse section at the middle.
'lhc nature of my invention consists in employing two boards, A A, of suitable length for a seat, and both boards joined together at the edges form the width of one, and these are firmly secured in this position by the pieces I) b, figs. 1, 2, and 4, which are placed, one above and the other below the boards, transversely therewith, and are bolted or screwed strongly together. The blocks or pieces 6 b are so made that the boards are elevated at their inner edges, forming a kind of arch the entire length of the sent, and the pieces I) b are placed directly across the middle. ()n the ends of the boards, transversely therewith, are what may be termed burs, B B, figs. 1, 2, and 3, which may be made either of wood or iron, the inner ends meeting at thejoint between the boards, while the outer ends project to the front and rear of the seat, and are the points at which the seat is attztehed to the vehicle beneath it. The bars B are firmly attached at their inner ends to the boards A A, but not to each other; they are therefore elevated and the outer ends depressed, being so maintained by the arched position of the boards before described. But when weight is placed upon the seat the boards spring by torsion or twisting between the eentreheld in the arched position, and the ends, these ends being only attached tothe bars B, while the outer depressed ends of the bnrs'only rest upon the wagon to which the seat is intended to belong, thus making the boards of a wagon seat form springs for the same, when suspended in the manner herein described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is A spring-wagon sent, made either ofv wood or iron, when constructed in the manner andfor the purpose substantially {LS herein set forth.
. EZRA REED.
