Description

P. HIRES.
improvement in Hin-gesfur Table-Leaves, &c.
Patented April 25,1821.
druid ttte PHILLIPHHIRES, OF COLUMBUS, KENTUCKY.
Letters Patent No. 114,009, dated April 25, 1871.
EMPROVEMENT IN HINGES FOR TABLE-LEAVES, &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itkuown that I, PEILLIP Hlnns, of Columbus, in the county of Hickman and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinge for Table-Leaves, 85e. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of' a portion of a table top and leaf to which my improved hinge has been attached.4
Figure 2 is an under-side view of the same, the leaf being removed.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line x x, tig. 2.
Similar letters -gf reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved vhinge for hinging table-leaves and for other purposes, which shall be simple in construction and effective in operation, rendering the knuckle in table- -leaf joints unnecessary, while at the same time the hinge will be entirely out of sight, and which will hold the leaf snugly to its place, thus saving labor and eX-. pense', and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the hinge, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
A represents a table top, and B the leaf.
C is the hinge, one part or strap cl of which is let into and secured by screws to the table-leaf B in the ordinary manner.
The other part, c, has its middle part cut away, and its edge is turned up, or has a flange, c", formed upon it, as shown in figs. l, 2, and 3.
The part cZ clot' the hinge C is let into the under side of the table top A, and isheld in place by a. bar, D, secured by screws to the under side ofthe top A, and which allows the said part c"l c3 of the hinge C to slide freely in its seat.
E is a spring, which may be a rubber block or a coiled or other inet-al spring, which is interposed between the flange c3 'of the hinge G and the ber D, and which may be kept in place by-a guide-pin attached to the said flange c.
By this construction, as the part c2 c of the hinge C is drawn out in operating the said hinge thc spring E yields to allow of this movement, while at the same time holding the parts connected by said hinge closely together at all times.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hinge for table-leaves provided with a flanged, recessed, and sliding leaf, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
2. In combination with the elements of the above claim, the spring E, arranged to be compressed in the line of motion of the sliding leaf, as shown and described.
