Description

tanica (eine FRANCIS HOVEY, 0F NEW-YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 98,379, dated Dccfnnbcr` 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAJRRIAGEJACKS.
The Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANC'Is HovELof-the city, county, and State of N ew' York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carriage-Jacks, of which the following is a full, clear, and 'exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, forining part of this specification, and in which- Figures l and 2 represent side Views of a. carriagejack constructed in accordance with my improvement, with the operating parts in different positions.
Figure 3 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a certain combination of lever with 'a stop or locking projection at its forward end, a toggle-joint motion or motions operated by said lever, and lifting-bar or piece in sliding-rol1er connection with the stand, the whole constitutingaI jack that is at once cheap, powerful, and secure.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents thestand or frame of the jack, formed with back and front sloping guides or bearing-surfaces a b, for the stepped lifting-bar or piece B, which is also formed with sloping guides or bearing-surfaces c d, to work up and down on or against rollers e j, the.
one of them connected with the lifting-bar B, and the other with the stand A, and operating in connection with the guiding-surfaces a c, serving to tie and secure an easy run or travel to the lift when down, mayr rest upon top of the stand.
Said lifting-bar is operated by means' of a lever, C,
ing-bar, which,-
pivoted to the stand, as at S, and made to embrace both sides or surfaces thereof, and with its forward ends or portions formed to constitute stops or lockingsurfaces e e to (when extended or straightened out) a,
to each other, by link-rods or bars h, withthe lever C..
A carriage-jack thus constructed may be got up cheap, works easy or free, and is very' powerful, also secure as regards its action, without being obliged to have recourse to separate' locking-devices, inasmuch las in working the lifting-bar Bof the jack from its down position, as shown in tig. 1, to its raised position, as shown in fig. 2, the forward'ends or surfaces e e, of the lever C, are made to act as' stops to the straightened toggle-joints D, to lock or hold, the same and the lifting-bar B, carried by them.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is f The combination of the lever C, with -its lockingl surfaces or stops e, the toggle-joint motion or motions D, and the lifting-bar B, in roller-sliding connection with the. stand A, substantially as shown and described.
