JOHN H. ELWARD', OF POLO, ILLINOIS.A
Letters Patent No.. 96,408, dated Nocember 2, 1869; antedated October` 22, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whoml it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. EDWARD, of Polo, in the. county of Ogle. and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
. link being suspended from a notch in the front ofthe standard, and engaging with one of the recesses, in the back of the reciprocating bar.
Second, in the combination of the slips and hooks with the jack, in the manner hereinafter described.
A is a standard, having a concave serrated surface, which registers with the convex reciprocating-bar B.
lhis standard A has a notch upon its upper front, from which is suspended the shifting diagonal link d.
B is a convex reciprocating bar, supported at any given point by means of the link d, resting in one of the recesses in its back front.
O is a lever, fulcrumed in the upper end ofthe bar B by means of the pivot e. Y
b b are hooks attached to the bar B upon each side ofthe lever C, upon which the jack can be hung when desired. l
The jack may at times become useful as a step. For this'purpose, steps made of metal, or other suitable nnlterial,.arc attached, to the standard A'. in the manner clearly shownin the drawings.
To operate this jack, it is placed under the Weight to be raised. The lifting-bar B is then adjusted until 'the point of its level-O rcstsimmediately under the object. The level is then depressed, which causes the serrated faces of the standard A and bar B, to become the more firmly locked.
VVh-at l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Fatent, is-
1. lhc standard A, having a concave serrated surface, in combination with the reciprocating adjustable lifting-bar B, having a convex serrated surface, and
the shifting diagonal supporting-link clLsubstantiallyV as shown'and described.
2. The combination of the slips g givith the standard A, and of the hooks b b', with the reciprocating bar B, in the manner shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I hereby sign niy name to this specication, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
