To ALL WHoM 1r MAY. coNcnR'N:
Be it known that I, J'. B. BREATHITT, ofthe county of Cooper, and State of Missouri, have invented anew and improved Nail-Extractor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art Vto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'forming part of this specication.
w The figure is a perspective view of my improved nail-extractor. Y
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved nail-extractor, which shall be simple in construction, durable, and cheap; and it consists inthe combination of the lever and fulcrum with each other, when said parts are constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
Ais the lever, which is made insubstantially the form shown in the figure. The lever A is made of wrought iron, and the points a are made'of steel, the slot or' notch of the point a being so formed as to take hold of Ya large or small nail, and holdit securely, whether said nail has or has not a. head. B is the fulcrum, the lower end of which ismade pointed, so as' to take a firm hold' of the substance' from which the nail is to be drawn.
' The leverA is adjustably pivoted to the upper end of the fulcrum B, by'a bolt or pin, which passes through the notched upper end of the said fulcruln, and through one or the other of the holes formed through the body of the leverA, according to the amount of leverage required to extract the nails. The part of the lever A through which the holes are formed should be made heavier than the other parts ofthe saidllever, to compensate for the weakening of said lever by the formation of the said holes.
I This construction of a nail-extractor adapts it for use in drawing all kinds of nails, from an ordinary tack to a railroad-spike.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The fulcrum, B, of the nail-extractor A, when pointed at its lower end, and adapted to be adjusted longi; Y 'tudinally of the extractor A, to increase or decrease the leverage of the latter, as herein described, for the purpose specied.
J. B. BREATHITT.
