UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. CUTTING, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPLEMENT FOR DISMANTLING BUILDERS STAGINGS, SLC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,417, dated March 28, 1893.
Application led September 27, 1892. Serial No. 447,030. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE H. CUTTING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Implement for Dismantling Builders Stagings and Similar Usages, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same. f
The objects of my present invention are to provide a convenient and efficient implement for use in dismantling or taking down builders stagings, and by means of which the ledger boards nailed to staging poles can be quickly and easily released therefrom without material injury to the staging stock; also avoiding the expenditure of time and labor involved in the usual practice of cutting off the nails at each point of attachment. These objects I attain by the implement illustrated in the drawings, wherein l Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my implement in position of use. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the offset ends of the pressoff bars.
My invention consists in a tool or implement composed of a pair of levers having one end offset laterally for taking 'a hold on the angle of the staging-post or upright; also a straight portion adapted to be pressed against the ledger-board near its point of attachment, or adjacent to the sides of the post to which the ledger-board is nailed; and having combined with the other end ahand-lever or means for applying power to force the said levers or bars outward, or for crowding the ledgerboard and staging post in opposite directions and thereby withdrawing the nails and releasing the attachment of the ledger to the post.
Referring to parts, A denotes the stagingpole or upright post; B the ledger-board fastened thereto by nails n in the usual manner.
C C indicate the press-off-bars or levers of suitable length to reach somewhat above and below the ledger-board and fitted with the straight portion 2 for resting against the side of the same. The upper ends of said pressoff bar are extended forward and fitted with an eye, as at e, and the parts are connected or pivoted together by a transversely disposed bolt or pin D, over which the eyes e fit loosely and are retained by nuts or heads d, while their lower ends are oppositely offset or provided each with a lateral claw, as at 5, that can hold or serve as a fulcrum on the angle of the post A, as indicated.
A hand-lever or power-applying device F is connected with or fulcrumed on the bolt D said lever having an end or cam 6 that is suitably formed to take bearing against the face of the post A, and exert a force for separating the parts when the operator swings up the handle end 7 of said lever. This operating device is preferably a lever having a hub 4 fixed to the central part or pin D, and fitted with a turned up or curved end 6 that can roll against the surface of the post. The bolt or fulcrum-pin D is of sufficient length to reach across the face of the staging-post A and allow the bars C to lie parallel and adjacent to the sides thereof. Said bars C are arranged to slide on the bolt so that they can be adjusted inward or outward thereon to any degree that will accommodate the variations in the size of the staging posts, which may varyin size from three inches to four and onehalf inches, more or less.
The operation is as followsz-For releasing the ledger-board the operator drops the bars C back of the ledger-board B, rests the cam 6 against the face of the post A, adjusts the claws or oiisets 5 to the angles of the posts and then swings up the handle 7. In the compound lever action the cam 6 forces the eye end of the bars C outward and the straight parts 2 acting from 5 as a fulcrum press off from the post by a simple, easy and quick movement, and in a manner that will not split the ledger-board or destroy the staging stud;
thus making a great savingin time, labor and material in the taking down of stagings.
It is obvious that the implement can be made either with the end 6 of the hand-lever IOO two press-off bars each having an opposite lateral offset or claw at one end, cent-rally an edge or bearing surface for engagement With the ledger-board, and a hinging eye at the other end, in combination with a transverse connecting-pivot or holt arranged through the said eyes, and a power-applying device connected with said pivot and adapted for action against the post or timber for forcing outward the ends of said press-oEE-levers, as set forth.
2. A tool or implement consisting of the press-olic bars or levers having` the lateral claw or offset at one end and the pivot eye at the GEORGE H. CUTTING.
