H. W. OLIVER, OF VHITNEYVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
FLOOR-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,67 6, dated April 15, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, H. W. OLIVER, of Whitneyville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Clamp for Laying Flooring; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement, the plane of section being through the center. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, (m) Fig. l, showing the plane of section. Fig. 3, is a plan or top view of the same.

My invention consists in the employment or use of a slidinof jaw and hook operated as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the implement is firmly secured to the beam and the board to be nailed pressed irmly up against the adj oining board previously nailed so as to form a close joint.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a cast iron plate or bed, in which a rod B, is tted longitudinally, said rod being allowed to slide freely in cross plates (a) in the plate or bed. To the outer end of the rod B, a jaw or head C, is attached. To one end of the plate or bed A, the end opposite to the end where the jaw or head C, Works, there are attached two upright lips or ledges (b) (b) in which the fulcra (e) of a lever D, works. The lower end of this lever below the fulcra (c) is of circular form, the center being taken from the fulcra (o), and teeth (d) are formed upon it, said teeth gearing into a rack E, which is tted and works in a groove or between proper ways in the end of the plate or bed A. The outer end of the rack E, is beveled, so as to form a wedge (a) as shown in Fig. 1.
F, represents a bar the upper end of which is fitted in a loop or socket Gr, at one side of the plate or bed A. The upper end of the bar F, has a projection (e) attached to its inner side, said projection passing through a slot in one of the lips or ledges (b) as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
H, is a rod which has a screw thread cut upon it, and this rod is fitted in a nut (g) at the lower end of the bar F. The lower end o-f the rod H, has a hook (h) upon it, shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The lever D, is connected to the rod B, by a bar I.
The implement is used as follows. The plate or bed A, is placed upon the beam or joist J, and the lever D, is elevated to a vertical position, or nearly so, as shown in black Fig. l. The head or jaw C, is consequently drawn up'to the end ofthe plate or bed A, and the rack E, will be drawn inward free from the projection (e) on the bar F. The rod H, is then screwed upward in the bar F, and the hook (It) fitted under neath the beam or joist J. The lever D, is then turned over in the position shown in red Fig. l, and the jaw or head C, will be forced outward against the board K, which board will be pressed up firmly against the board L, previously nailed to the beam or joist, forming a close joint. As the lever D, is moved in the position indicated in red Fig. l, the rack E, will be forced outward, and the beveled end (a) of the rack will pass under the projection (e) and the bar F, and rod H will be raised a certain distance corresponding with the thickness of the rack, and the hook (k) will be bound firmly against the under side of the beam or joist, and the plate or bed A, secured firmly upon the beam or joist.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent, is-
The sliding jaw or head C, and the hook (k) attached or fitted to the plate or bed A, and operated by the lever D, and rack E, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
