TURNING-JAW VISE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,385, dated November 9, 1852.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABIJAH HULBERT, of Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Turning-J aw Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my improvement consists in applying to a vise constructed with a movable jaw, a device composed of an endless screw working in combination with a thread cut on the edge of the plate of the movable jaw, by which said jaw may be moved and set or secured at any desired angle or position, relatively to the fast aw of the vise; thus making it subserve the purpose of the ordinary vise, and the turning aw one, in the same implement. Where it is desirable to clamp articles of a bevel fo-rin irrespective of their length or their position. in the vise, it will be found to clamp them at the ends of the jaw without bruising, as well as if placed in the center thereof.

To enable others skilled in the art I will proceed to describe the vise, and the nature of my improvement. Tn the annexed drawingsA represents the back or fast jaw connected firmly to the bed plate and bar B on which the other jaw slides: C the pipe box, D the screw: H the turning aw: M a turning pin I a circular disk or plate attached permanently to the pipe box: J a projecting flange securing the jaw under I. Now it will be seen that the jaw H may be turned either way; the above parts are common to many vises, but the invention consists in constructing the before described vise with a projection J upon the edge of which is cut a series of grooves forming a nut in which the screw L mesh (shown in Fig. 2 a top view and Fig. 3 section in elevation). This projection J forms a portion of the revolving jaw H, and when it is desired to set the moving jaw at an angle to the fast one A, by turning the screw L it moves the plate J J carrying with it the jaw H, and thus makes it a fast jaw by the lock of the screw, and serves the purpose of the ordinary fast jaw vise, as well as the turning jaw, in the same implement.

I am aware that the revolving jaw of a vice has been set and then secured to any desired angle with the fixed jaw, and I do not claim the so doing but What I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Latent is- Constructing the jaw H of a revolving vise, with a flange or projection J provided on the edge thereof with a female screw in which mesh the screw L, or other equivalent, operating on said jaw in the manner and for the purposes set forth and shown, by which I am enabled to both set and secure the revolving jaw at the same time.
