Description

S. R. SIMPSON.
Patented Jan. 7, 1851.
Bench Vise.
STATES SAllIL. R. SIMPSON, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVED PARALLEL VISE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 7,892, dated January 7, 1851.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL It. SIMPSON, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Bench-Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a workbench with the improvement attached, and Fig. 2 a representation of the improvement.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I attach a block (marked A in the drawings) on the inner end of the screw 0, which passes through the vise, which block is grooved on its upper surface, and travels with the screw and works on the piece D, which runs from the top of the bench-leg F and crosses underneath the bed of the bench. Two oblique pieces (marked B in the drawings) extend from the block A, to which they are fastened, to the lower end of the movable vise-jaw, to which they are also attached, while two small keys (marked E, as shown in the block and movable vise-jaw) enter grooves in the screw to prevent said block and Vise-jaw from slipping back and forth. By means of the cross-piece D and the oblique piece B, the block A is always kept in line with the screw, and at the same time a regular movement of the visejaw is secured, so that whether it moves in or out its position is always vertical. These parts may be constructed of any material that will answer the purpose.
The utility of this combination is to obviate the frequent adjustment of the vise-jaw to the ever-varying thickness of lumber and other materials which are to be worked in a vise.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The attaching the lower end of the moving jaw of the vise to a block that is attached to and moves with the end of the screw, in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
SAMUEL R. SIMPSON.
