Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJ. H. GREEN, vOE PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY.
CARPENTER S CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,917, dated August 9, 1853.
To all w/Lom t may concern.'
Be it known that I,BENJAM1N H. GREEN, of Princeton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Carpenter-s Clamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of my improved carpenters clamp, Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 side elevation of a part broken olf, showing a part in a different position.
Like parts are designated by like letters in all the figures.
I construct a frame, consisting` of an oblong beam A, of firm wood, and two upright supports E, E, of iron, which are furnished with projections reaching down the sides of said beam, near one end, and are coniined there by adjusting screws 2'., i &c. Said supports are connected together by rods a, cz &c., the two lower ones being parallel with each other. A screw B, is inserted, with stationary bearings, in the supports E, E, in such a position that its axis shall be parallel with the guide-rods a, a. A driving nut F, works o-ver the screw B, and has also apertures, which travel on the guide-rods a, a. Another pair of guiderods b, Z) pass through one of the supports, parallel with the rods a, a, and with each other, and connect the driving nut F, with a movable jaw F. Said jaw travels fo-rward and backward when the screw B, .is turned one or the other way by the crank C. The liXed jaw Gr, is inserted in a suitable aperture near the other end of the beam A. This arrangement answers for large articles within certain limits. But to adapt my improved clamp to articles more .various in size, and especially to small articles, I add the following device A pair of arms H, H, are attached, one on each side to the beam A, by means of a bolt g, passing through one end of each arm and horizontally through the said beam. Said arms vibrate upon the bolt g, which may be transferred to other holes in the beam A,-as at f,-in order to change the position of the arms if desired. The movable ends of said arms curve up so as to reach above the beam A, when they are in a horizontal position. Another bolt L, passes through the curved ends of the arms, and through a bar I, which has a large jaw d, o-n its shorter, and a small jaw e, on its longer arm. Said bar is made to turn freely upon the bolt It. A bar 0, having a small jaw corresponding with the small jaw-e, on one end, may be attached to the large jaw F, but removable at pleasure. When said bar is attached to the jaw,F, the small jaw c, of the bar I, is brought opposite its jaw, as shown in Figs. l and 2. This arrangement. is used for clamping small articles. Then larger articles are to be clamped, the small bar c, 1s removed, and the bar I, reversed as shown in Fig. 3, which may readily be done when the arms H, H, are turned up over their fulcrum g. By this means the jaw d, is brought opposite to the jaw F; which arrangement serves to clamp larger articles than the last described, but smaller than with the simple clamp.
My improved clamp is therefore by the several variations in the position of its parts, as above described, rendered far more useful than the ordinary clamp, because it is applicable to so many diiferent sizes of articles, while its simplicity and cheapness recommend it before other inferior clamps.
The combination of the screw and double sets of guides, all parallel with one another, render the operation of the clamp as perfect as possible, by obviating friction and all lateral strain or warping of the parts.
IVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adjustable vibratory arms H, H, and reversible jaws d, e, with the adjustable clamp, for the purpose of presenting jaws of'diiterent sizes and at different distances from each other, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
The above specification of my improved carpenters clamp signed this 18th day of .Tune 1851.
