IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED ANVIL AND VISEI Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,380, dated October 23, 1877; application filed September 11, 1877.

.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. PARKER, of the city and county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Anvil and Vise; and I declare the following to be a description of my said invention sufiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved anvil and vise. Fig. 2 represents a plan view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of the same.

The object of my-invention is to provide a cheap, serviceable, and convenient tool for the use of farmers and others, asan assistance in effecting repairs of ordinary household articles, farm implements, and for other similar home purposes; and my invention consists in the manner of constructing and arranging the vise-jaw with the anvil-body, and in a peculiar combined anvil and vise, such as hereinafter described.

The anvil-body A, with its horn a, I form of cast-iron, with its interior cored out, as indicated by dotted lines 0. The upper part or top of the body B is chilled when cast, andv is finished by grinding, thus giving a very hard and smooth top surface. The heel end at A is squared and serrated to form one part of the vise; The base is extended at the heel end to form a bed or arm, A on which the movable vise-jaw D is supported and guided, the upper surface of the extension or bed A being planed off, and the foot (I of the jaw D fitted to slide thereon, in the manner illustrated. A spline, 0, serves to guide and retain the parts laterally.

The jaw D is made of equal width with the end A of the anvil-body, and is arranged to close squarely against the serrated face, with its upper surface flush or level with the anviltop, as shown.

The screw E passes through a central opening in the jaw D, and screws into a threaded opening in the end of the anvil-body, as indicated. A coiled-wire spring, F, is arranged around the screw, between the jaw and body A, which serves to press the jaw D outward, and obviates the necessity of a collar on the screw D.

An opening, I, is formed through the chilled top, in which to support a cutting-instrument, or to assist in driving pins and rivets.

Openings ff are formed in the base to receive bolts or screws for securing the tool in position.

It will be observed that. the base-extension A forms a solid support for the jaw, so that hammering on the jaw does not strain or injure the screw.

I am aware that an anvil and vise have here tofore been combined in a single tool, and I do not claim, broadly, such combination; but

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. In combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, the hollow anvil-body A, having squared jaw end A and base-extension A with guideway e, the movable vise-j aw D,

with foot d, seated and guided upon the extension-piece A working square and flush against the end A, the operating-screw E, passing through central part of jaw D, and screwing into the end of the anvil-body, and the spring F, all arrangedand operating in the peculiar manner set forth.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, the within-described tool, consisting of the cast-iron anvil-body A, with chilled top surface, cored or hollowed out internally, and provided with the jaw guiding and supporting piece A e, the vise-jaw D, and jaw-operating screw E, all constructed, combined, and operating as herein shown and described.
