Description

G. RIEXINGER.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22, 1913.
1,169,870. Patented Feb.1, 1916.
INVENTUR ATTEIRNEYE- GEORGE RIEXINGEB, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
WRENCH.
Application filed-May 22, 1913. Serial No. 769,202.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE RIEXINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to the class of wrenches comprising a handle which carries a fixed head or jaw and a movable jaw cooperating therewith and adjusted by means of a screw.
The object of my invention is the construction of a strong, simple and durable wrench of this type which can be cheaply manufactured.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 8--3, Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
1 indicates the handle of the wrench which carries the fixed or integral head 2 forming the stationary jaw of the tool. If desired, the face of this jaw may be serrated or otherwise roughened, as shown at 3.
4 indicates the movable jaw which faces the fixed jaw in the usual manner and which has a shank composed of separated longitudinal bars 5 and a cross bar or brace-bar 6 connecting the ends of said bars on the side of the head 2 opposite that on which the movable jaw is arranged. These three bars are formed in one piece with the movable aw, forming a strong and inexpensive construction. This shank is slidably arranged in a single transverse slot or mortise '7 formed in the head 2.
8 indicates a screw or equivalent means for adjusting the movable aw relatively to the fixed jaw. In the preferred construction shown, the shank of this screw is secured in an opening in the base of the movable jaw by a cross pin 9. The screw is arranged lengthwise between the bars 5 and passes through the slot 7. Engagingthis screw is a nut 10 which is held against endwise movement in openings 11 formed in the side of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
head 2. The movable aw is adjusted toward and from the fixed jaw by turning this nut, in a manner common to this type of wrenches.
As shown in the drawings, the shank of the movable jaw is preferably fitted closely in the slot 7 and a small amount of clearance is left between the ends of the nut and the edges of the openings 11, so that when the wrench is applied to a nut, bolt or other object to be turned, the shank-bars 5 bear against the upper and lower ends of the slot 7 at diagonally opposite points or corners, producing a sort of clutch action between the shank and the head 2 and practically relieving the screw 8 from transverse strains, the screw serving principally to maintain the adjustment of the wrench when temporarily laid aside.
By providing the wrench with a single guide-slot or mortise 7 for the shank of the movable jaw, the cost of the wrench is inaterially reduced, while by uniting the ends of the shank-bars 5 by the cross bar 6 they are effectually stifi ened and braced at that end, avoiding liability of their breaking under the clutch or gripping action above described.
I claim as my invention:
A wrench comprising a handle having a head forming a fixed jaw, said head being provided with a single transverse slot and openings arranged in the walls of said slot, a movable jaw cooperating with said head and having a shank slidably arranged in said slot. said shank consisting of a pair of separated longitudinal bars and a transverse brace-bar rigidly connecting the rear ends of said bars, said movable jaw, longitudinal bars and brace-bar being formed in one piece, a rotary nut arranged in said openings, and an adjusting screw secured to the movable jaw, arranged between said longitudinal bars and engaging said nut.
Witness my hand this 20th day of May,
GEORGE RIEXINGER. Witnesses:
