GEORGE I-I. PUTNAM, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WRENCH.
Application filed October 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches and particularly to that class of wrenches provided with a fixed jaw and a pivoted jaw.
The main object of the present invention is to relieve the pivot of the movable jaw from all strain when the wrench is in use,- provision being made to prevent end movement of the movable jaw while bearing surfaces on the body portion of the wrench are provided to coact with cooperating bearing surfaces on the movable jaw.
The invention consists of a body portion having a handle and a fixed jaw, said body portion being provided with a slotted extension in which is pivoted the movable jaw which has suitable bearing surfaces and shoulders adapted to coact with the walls of said slot, and the under face of said extension when the wrench is in use.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction andarrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter wen. g Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents-an elevation of a wrench embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1 with the movable jaw in operative position, a portion being shown in section.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawin s.
Tn the drawings, 10 is the body portion of the wrench provided at one end with a handle 11 and at the opposite end with an extension 12 having a slot 13 cut transversely therethrough. Between the slot 13 and the handle 11 the body portion 10 is provided with a fixed jaw 14: preferably formed integral therewith and having its working face provided with a plurality of serrations or teeth 15. Extending across the slot 13 and positioned in the extension 12 is a pivot pin 16. This pin 16 ex- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1917.
Serial No. 127,018.
tends through an arm 17 formed upon the movable jaw 18, the working face of which is provided with a plurality of serrations or teeth 19 adapted to coact with the serrations or teeth 15 on the fixed jaw 14: when the wrench is in use either'on a nut or a pipe or any other similar device which it is desired to turn. While the working faces of the jaws 1 1 and 18 are shown as straight in the drawings, it is obvious that for different purposes either or both of these jaws may be given greater or less curvature and the serrations or teeth 15 and 19 may be varied at will.
On either side of the pivot 16 the walls of the slot 13 are provided with inclined surfaces 2021, with which corresponding bearing surfaces upon the arm or extension 17 coact when the movable jaw 18 is in operative position, as clearly indicated at the left of Fig. 3 of the drawings. The movable member 18 is also provided with a shoulder 22 adapted to engage when in operative position with the projection 23 at the end of the extension 12. The engagement of the shoulder 22 with this projection 23 prevents any end movement of the movable jaw 18 when in use, while the coaction of the opposite faces of the arm or extension 17 with the bearing surfaces 20 and 21 relieve the pivot pin 16 from all strain. The relief of strain upon the pivot pin 16 is further assisted by means of the curved shoulders 24 on each side of the movable jaw 18, these shoulders 24 bearing against the under surfaces 25 of the extension 12 on either side of the slot 13. By this construction there is at no time any strain upon the pin 16, this serving simply as a means for preventing the separation of the two parts of the wrench. WVhen it is desired to use the wrench, the movable jaw 18 may be readily thrown open and the jaws 1418 applied to 'a nut or other member that it is desired to turn. Upon any downward movement of the handle 18 in the direction of the arrow a on Fig. 3 of the drawings, the jaws will grip the article engaged, and movement in the opposite direction will release the jaws and permit the wrench to be moved into position preparatory to another bite upon said article. Owing to the inclination of the working faces 15 and 19 to each other when the movable jaw 18 is in its operative position, different sizes of articles within certain limits may be gripped. This makes a very simple wrench which it is almost im possible to get out of order, and which is always ready for use Without any adjustment. It will sustain hard usage for the reason that no strain is brought to bear upon the pivot member, the bearing surfaces of the movable jaw and the body portion when the wrench is in use giving the wrench great rigidity.
It is believed that the many advantages of this invention will be fully apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A wrench consisting of a member provided with a handle and having a jaw intermediate its ends, substantially parallel bearouter end of said member and a movable jaw pivoted thereto provided with bearing surfaces on opposite sides thereof adapted when in use to engage with the bearing surfaces on said member whereby all strain is removed from the pivot member.
2. A wrench consisting of a member provided with a handle and having a jaw formed integral therewith intermediate its ends, substantially parallel bearing surfaces extending transversely of said member between its outer end and said jaw, and a movable jaw pivoted thereto provided with bearing surfaces on opposite sides of the pivot member adapted when in use to engage with the bearing surfaces on said member whereby all strain is removed from said pivot member.
3. A wrench consisting of a member having a handle at one end and a transverse inclosed slot in the opposite end, said member being provided with a fixed aw adjacent said slot and between it and said handle, a movable jaw having an arm positioned in said slot, a pivot mounted in said member and arm, and inclined surfaces for said slot on opposite sides of said pivot adapted to be engaged by opposite sides of said arm when the wrench is in use.
4. A wrench consisting of a member having a handle at one end and a transverse slot in its opposite end and provided with a working jaw at one end of said slot and a laterally extending projection at the opposite end, said slot having inclined bearing surfaces on opposite sides and at opposite ends of said slot, a movable working jaw provided with an arm positioned in said slot and having a shoulder adapted to bear against said projection when said jaw is in mg surfaces extending transversely of the operative position, and means for pivoting said movable jaw to said member.
5. A wrench consisting of a member having a slotted extension beyond a fixed jaw thereon, a movable jaw having an arm alined therewith and pivotally mounted in said slotted extension, the slot of which is provided with inclined bearing surfaces coacting with the opposite faces of said arm when the wrench is in use and said movable aw being provided with shoulders coacting with a wall of said extension to prevent movement thereof toward its pivot.
G. A wrench consisting of a member provided with a handle at one end and a transverse inclosed slot at the other end, said slot having each end wall thereof provided with two faces disposed at an angle to each other and with the lower face of one wall parallel with the upper face of the other wall; a fixed jaw on said member between said slot and handle; and a coacting movable jaw having an arm positioned in saidslot and pivoted to said member at a point intermediate said parallel faces.
7. A wrench consisting of a member provided with a handle at one end and a transverse inclosed slot at the other end, said slot having each end wall thereof provided with two faces disposed at an angle to each other and with the lower face of one wall parallel with the upper face of the other wall; a
fixed jaw on said member between said slot and handle; and a coacting movable jaw having an arm positioned in said slot and pivoted to said member at a point intermediate said parallel faces, sa'id movable jaw being thicker than said arm and terminating in curved bearing surfaces coacting with a wall of said member.
8. A wrench consisting of a member provided with a handle at one end, a transverse inclosed slot at the other end, and a laterally extending jaw in substantial alinement with said slot; a substantially straight movable jaw provided with a narrow arm positioned in said slot; a pivot extending through said arm; and parallel bearing surfaces on the walls of said slot on opposite sides of said pivot with which the edges of said arm are adapted to bear when the wrench is in use.
