Application filed October 6, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO A. CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-\Vrenches, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and easily adjusted pipe wrench which is so formed as to its jaws as to be easily adjustable and particularly on pipes close to walls or other flat surfaces; and the invention consists in the novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with the jaws in the closed position; Fig. 2 is an edgewise elevation of the head of the wrench; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the head of the wrench with the jaws engaging a pipe, the side of the slot in the shank being broken away to show the action of the parts in adjusting the jaws to grip and turn a pipe; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the adjusting ring for the movable aw.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the handle of the wrench which has the shank 11 of the stiff jaw 12 attached therein. The shank 11 is somewhat enlarged adjacent the jaw 12 to strengthen the shank 11 around the slot 13 therethrough in which is'pivotally attached the end of the threaded bar 14 by ieans of the pin 15. The slot 13 is longer than the width of the bar 14 to provide for the pivotal movement of said bar 14 on the pin 15 within the slot 13 and also to provide room for the leaf spring 16' which is attached by means of a screw 17 to the enlarged portion of the shank 11 and extends within the lower end of the slot 13 beneath the bar 14 to normally press said bar against the wall of the upper end of the slot 13, as shown in dotted line'in Fig. 1. i
The bar14 is threaded on its upper and lower edges to receive thereon the threaded adjustment ring 18 which is mounted within the crosswise slot 19 in the movable aw 20, the ring 18 being threaded at 21 on its in- Specification of Letters Patent.

ner side to fit the threads 21 of the bar 14 and thereby adjust the movable jaw 20 backward and forward as desired, said movable jaw 20 having a slot therethrough at right angles to the crosswise slot 19 to slidably receive the bar 14. The ring 18 is preferably knurled on its exterior for convenience in turning the same. The jaws 12 and 20 are provided with oppositely turned teeth 22 and 23 on their opposing faces so as to bite the surface of the pipe 24.
In using the wrench the space between the jaws 12 and 20 is adjusted slightly less than the diameter of the pipe 24, the jaws are then pressed upon the rounded surface of the pipe 24, the spring 16 permitting the close passage of the jaws on account of the slight giving of the jaw 20 as it presses down onto the spring 16. Said spring 16, however, is sufficiently stifi' to hold the jaw 20 firmly to its work, so that when the wrench is turned by means of the handle 20 the teeth 22 and 23 bite into the surface of the pipe 24 thereby giving a strong hold upon the exterior of the pipe for turning the same, which hold can be easily released by moving the handle 10 in the opposite direction to that which attains the grip on the pipe, so that by moving the handle and jaws back and forth the pipe may be quickly turned as desired.
I claim as new:
A wrench comprising a shank formed with a fixed jaw, said shank having a slot formed therethrough adjacent the jaw, a bar having one end pivotally mounted in said slot, a jaw adjustably mounted on the bar, and an L-shaped leaf spring having one end inset in the shank and the other end free and disposed in the slot and having an intermediate arched part bearing against the bar eccentrically to its pivotal connection, said free end of the spring being completely housed in the slot, said spring serving to swing the bar upwardly, and thus the movo'rro A. CARLSON.
