Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Ozone Park, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and particularly to what are known as pipe wrenches, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and convenient of operation, and which may be more rapidly or quickly manipulated and operated than devices of this class as usually constructed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wrench; Fig. 2 a similar view showing the operative parts thereof in section; and, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a wrench of the class specified, comprising a handle member (1 having a shank or on the end of which is pivoted a jaw b. The shank a is rectangular in cross section as in the case of other wrenches of this class, and the jaw b is provided with a transverse aperture 1) through which said shank passes and said jaw is connected with said shank by a pivot pin, bolt, screw or similar device If, and the aperture 1) is slightly larger than the shank a in transverse section, and the jaw b when connected I with the shank a is adapted to swing to a slight extent on said shank and in the same plane therewith as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The jaw b is provided in the front face thereof with the usual teeth I), and the poll or back portion 1) of said jaw is provided with a radial bore 1) in which is placed a strong spiral spring 0, and said spring is secured in the bore b by means of a screw-threaded plug (1 having a shank d which passes into said spring. The spring 0 normally holds the jaw b at right angles to the shank a as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, but said spring will permit the jaw b to swing slightly on the shank a", in the operation of the wrench as hereinafter described, and as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in order to accomplish this result, the aperture 1) through which the shank a passes is formed at a slight angle to said shank as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
Secured to the shank a adjacent to the handle a is a keeper e through which the shank a passes, and the handle a adjacent to the shank o is preferably provided with shoulders a against which the keeper e bears, and the keeper e on the front side of the shank a is extended and provided with a bore 6- which is parallel with the shank a". Mounted on the shank a between the keeper 6 and the jaw 11 is a jaw f movable longitudinally of the shank a and adjustable thereon, and said jaw is provided with a screw f 2 movable freely through the bore 0 in the keeper 6 and mounted on said screw is a nut g.
In assembling the parts of the device, the keeper 6 is first slipped on over the shank a after which the adjustable jaw f with the screw f 2 having the nut g thereon is slipped on over said shank and the jaw b is then secured to the end thereof. i
In the operation of my improved wrench, the screw f 2 is free to slide through the keeper e and the jaw f may be moved into any desired position on the shank a by simply sliding it 011 said shank and by turning the nut 9 until it strikes the keeper 0 as shown in Fig. 1, the jaw f may be secured in any desired position, or prevented from moving toward the handle of the device, and in this way the jaw f may be adjusted by hand and by sliding it on the shank a so that it will closely grasp and hold a pipe or other article in connection with the jaw b.
It will be seen that by means of my improvement, the jaw f may be much more quickly adjusted into the desired position than with other devices of this class as usually constructed, it being possible, as will be understood, to rapidly turn the nut g into any desired position by simply passing the palm of the hand and the fingers thereover.
The jaw f is provided with the usual teeth f in the face thereof, and the keeper 6 is preferably provided with a hood 0 which extends in the direction of the handle a and which covers the screw f 2 when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, but said hood is not an essential feature of my invention and may or may not be employed, but when employed prevents the screw from coming in contact with hands in operating the wrench.
Although, I have shown my improvement applied to what is known as a pipe wrench, it will be apparent that the same may be applied to an ordinary monkey wrench in which case the jaw f will be rigid with or stationary on the shank a the other parts being the same as herein shown and described.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which the back or poll of the jaw b is provided with a forwardly directed extension h forming an angular recess b in the front or hearing face of said jaw, and the movable jaw f is cut out at the back to form a corresponding angular recess k and into which the forwardly directed extension 71 of the back or poll portion of the jaw Z2 may enter so as to bring the operating faces of said jaws together, and this form of construction gives more room for the spring 0 and the plug (F and also permits the said spring and plug to be placed forwardly of the pivotal point I) of the jaw b.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the wall b of the aperture in the jaw 12 through which the shank of the handle a passes is beveled in the back part of said aper ture and the opposite face of said aperture is beveled forwardly as shown at h?, but in the construction shown in Fig. 3, the front face of the shank a? is beveled as shown at 71 while the corresponding wall I) of the aperture through which the shank a passes is made straight, but the operation of these parts with the construction shown in Fig. 3 will be substantially the same as with the construction shown in Fig. 2.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A wrench of the class described, comprising a handle provided with a shank, a jaw pivoted on the end of said shank, a tension device for holding said jaw at right angles to said shank and for permitting it to swing in a plane therewith, a keeper secured to said shank adjacent to the handle and provided with a bore parallel with said shank, an adjustable jaw mounted on the shank between said keeper and the first named jaw and provided with a screw which passes loosely through said bore, and a nut mounted on said screw.
2. A wrench of the class described, comprising a shank having a continuous handle at one end and a jaw at the other end, a stationary keeper connected with the end of the shank adjacent to the handle and an adjustable jaw mounted on said shank between said keeper and the first named jaw and provided with a screw which passes loosely through said keeper, and a nut mounted on said screw between the movable jaw and said keeper and movable with said jaw and screw longitudinally of and independently of the shank, said keeper being also provided with a hood which extends in the direction of the handle and covers said screw.
