Description
' I. H. ALFREY.
'WRENGH. APPLICATION FILED D150. 20, 1907.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
ISAAC H. ALFREY, OF MOUNT STERLING, KENTUCKY.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
. Application filed December 20, 1907. Serial No. 107,300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. ALFREY, a
. citizen of the United States, "residing at Mount Sterling, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Wrenches, of which the fol owing is a specification.
My invention relates to combined nut and pipe wrenches, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the means for adjusting and operating the same, as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same shown partly broken away.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the two views.
1n the said drawing the reference numerals 1 and 2 denote the two arms of the device, the same being pivoted together intermediate their length at 3, and being shaped at their operative ends to provide the squared or other shaped socket 4 adapted to act as a nut wrench, and the oppositely curved serrated portions adapted to act as a pi e wrench. Passing through the arm 2 on tlie other side .of the pivot 3, and in threaded engagement therewith,is an adjusting screw 6 having its inner end engaging in a recess 7 in the other arm 1, as shown, whereby the operative end of the device may be adjusted to closely engage the nut or pipe to be manipulated. The free ends of the arms 1 and 2 are provided with squared apertures 8 adapted to adjustably receive a cross bar 9 provided with a handle 10 at each end.
From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be understood as follows: When the operative end of the device is placed in engagement with a nut or pipe to be manipulated,'the screw 6 is adjusted to separate the arms 1 and 2 on that side of their pivotal connection 3, and thus bring together the operative ends of said arms to firmly engage the article to be manipulated. By means of the handles 10 on bar 9 the device may now be manipulated with augmented force, due to the leverage of bar 9. It will be observed, further, that by reason of ap lication of the power through bar 9, whic engages both arms 1 and 2, the strain on said arms wi be equally divided, which would not be the case were the power applied through a crank arm fixed to one of said arms 1 or 2. I also prefer to employ a spring 11 fixed to one of the arms, in this instance the arm 1, said spring being curved at its free end to frictionally engage the cross bar 9, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby said cross bar will be held against any but a positive movement.
with respect to the arm 1.
By providing the adjustable cross bar 9 for manipulating the device I am enabled to o erate the wrench in practically any posit1on that an ordinary straight handled wrench may be operated, as the cross bar 9 may be adjusted from end to endfor each half turn of the wrench, whereby, for instance, the same may be manipulated close to a projecting part that would interfere with a fixed crank on one of the arms 1 or 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A wrench, embodying arms pivoted intermediate their length and shaped at one end to engage the parts to be manipulated, and power applying means engaging the opposite ends of said arms and shiftable transversely with respect to both of said arms.
2. A wrench, embodying arms pivoted intermediate their length and shaped at one end to engage the parts power applying means engaging the opposite ends of said arms and shiftable transversely with respect to both of said arms, and means for retaining said power applying means in any adjusted position against any but a positive shift.
3. A wrench, embodying arms pivoted in termediate their length and shaped at one end to engage the parts to be mani ulated, a transverse bar engaging both sai arms at their opposite ends and adjustable transversely with respect to said arms, handles on the ends of said bar 'for manipulating the same, and a spring on one of said arms in frictional engagement with said bar tov retain the latter against any but a positive adjustment.
In testimony whereof aflix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
