ARTHUR CLARK ALLEN, OF RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Application filed. July 18, 1908. Serial No. 444,172.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented a new and useful Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact deable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an improvement in pipe wrenches and has for its object to provide a simple, efficient and durable device of this character having adjusting means which will enable the same to be applied to pipes of various sizes.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended cla1n1.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the box or frame.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the shank which is connected with a jaw 2, the two being formed integral with each other. The jaw 2 cooperates with the slidable or adjustable jaw 3 which is connected to a shank 4. The shanks 1 and 4 and the jaws 2 and 3 are independent of each other in construction, and are held together by means of a box or frame 5. The box or frame 5 is pivotally connected to the jaw 2, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the shank 4 is slidably mounted in the frame or box 5. The aws are provided with the usual teeth for gripping a pipe. The outer face of the shank 4 is also provided with teeth or serrations 6 which are engaged by like teeth or serrations 7 formed in the box or frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The two shanks are held in engagement by means of a spring 7 which is mounted on the shank 1 and which engages a projection 8 of the box or frame. The shank 4 of the jaw member 3 has a longitudinal recess 9 in its under surface adapted to receive a projection 9 on the upper surface of shank 1 of the jaw 2 for guiding the members of the wrench and preventing lateral displacement and to reinforce the resisting action, when in the act of turning a nut from the shank of a bolt. scription of the invention, such as will ena It will be seen that when it is desired to adjust the jaws, the portion 8 is pressed against the spring which releases the shank 4 and the movable jaw and the two jaws are then free to be adjusted.
It will be seen that my invention is simple, durable and efficient and that it is capable of engaging pipes of various sizes and that the gripping power of said wrench is exceptionally strong and firm.
What I claim is A relatively fixed jaw member and a slidable jaw member, adapted to coact with said fixed jaw member having its shank portion provided with a projection and said movable jaw member having a longitudinal slot or groove receiving said projection, a coupling member embracing said jaw member and having an inner central projection provided with a serrated or toothed surface engaging a corresponding surface of the shank portion of the movable jaw member, said coupling member having an arm or extension having an opening through which the shank portion of said fixed jaw member extends with one end extending away from the shank portion of the said movable jaw member and a spring fixed to said fixed jaw member and having a bent portion disposed within said opening, said spring adapted to deliver its pressure or tension upon said arm of said coupling, said fixed jaw member having a slot or recess receiving the bent portions of said spring.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR CLARK ALLEN.
