JOHN GEISENDORFER, OF WEIMAR, CALIFORNIA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,254, dated May 1, 1894.
' Application filed September 25, 1893. Serial 1%. 486,435. (No model.)
to which it appertains to make and use the same. I This invention relates to pipe wrenches, and has for its object to facilitate the opera tion of grasping a pipe with such devices, and accommodate the angular position thereof as well as to compensate for the strain brought to bear on the wrench.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and arran gement of the several parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawingsze-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line :r-0c, Fig. 1. I
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a shank which is considerably elongated, and at one end thereof is a jaw 2 pivotally connected thereto. The said jaw is formed with a hooked head 3, with an inner angular engaging edge 4;. Adjacent to the point at which the jaw 2 is connected to the shank 1, the latter is formed witha series of openings 5, and adjacent'to the openings on the inner edge is a series of serrations or teeth 6. Operating in conjunction with the parts heretofore set forth, is a slid- I a pipe is gripped by the wrench. Secured pin 14, to also hold the said sliding jaw 7, in
its adjusted position. Secured to the sliding jaw on its inner side is a fiat spring 15, which bears against the adjacent portions of the jaw 2, and the shank 1, in accordance with the adjustment of the said sliding jaw and the tendency of the said spring is to force the lower end of the sliding jaw inwardly toward the said shank in order tocause an engagement of the nose at the lower end of the edge with the serrations 6, and in making the adjustment desired, the said sliding jaw is pulled outwardly away from theshank 1, at its lower end against the action of the said spring. The said spring also tends to draw the jaw 2 over toward the jaw 7, by exerting its resiliency to cause the lower end of said sliding jaw to engage the serrations of the shank and thereby pull on the upper end of the sliding jaw and through the clip11,draw the jaw 2, over as stated.
In operation the sliding jaw is adjustable to suit the diameter of the pipe to be engaged and held by the engagement of the nose thereof with the serrations of the shank alone, or if desired, to retain the adjustment for some time, the pin is inserted through the openings in the slip 12 and the openings 5, of the shank.
' The construction of the device entire is simple and effective and oanjbe readily handled and applied as found desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as newis-- In a pipe wrench, the combination of a shank having a series of serrations or teeth thereon and a series of openings adjacent thereto, a jaw pivotally connected to the upper end of said shank and having an angular head, a sliding jaw having a spring attached thereto bearing against the aforesaid part and also supplied with an upper angular head with serrations and a lower nose In testimony whereof I have signed this adapted to engage the serrations of the shank specification in the presence of two subscriband clips secured to said sliding jaw and ening witnesses.
gaging the shank and aforesaid jaw, one of JOHN GEISENDORFER. said clips having an opening therethrough Witnesses: to align with the openings of the shank and JOHN OHAPPELL,
receive a pin, substantially as described. JOHN BUTLER.
