PIPE-WRENCH.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tuly 13, 1909.
Serial No. 1154.-,478.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HERBERT C. RAY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Sheridan, in the county of Hamilton, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pipe wrenches, the object being to provide a pipe wrench with a pivoted jaw and a pivoted lever, said jaw being connected to the lever by a bowed spring.
A further object of my invention is to provide a head with an adjustable jaw which is operated by a nut, for adjusting the same to suit different size pipes.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a pipe wrench which is so constructed that when placed upon a pipe and the lever forced downwardly it will force the pivoted jaw against the pipe so as to cause the 'teeth to grip the same more firmly.
With these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved pipe wrench the head and yoke being broken away so as to clearly show the pivoted jaw and lever. Fig. 2 is an edge view of my improved wrench, the lever being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a similar view to that of Fig. 1 showing the wrench in position on a pipe. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 on Fig. 1.
ln carrying out my improved invention l employ a head member l having a yoke portion 1 between which is ivotally mounted the head portion 2 of the ever 2 on a transverse pin 10, said head portion being provided with a beveled end having a recess formed therein in which is seated the angled end of a bowed spring 8, the other end of which its within the recess formed in the oblique edge of the jaw 7 which is ivotally mounted in the yoke at its forwarc end on a pivot pin 9 and is provided with a serrated enlarged jaw face 7. This spring has a tendency to exert a pressure against the upper end of thepivoted jaw so as to hold the pivoted jaw in such a position that it will readily ass over I the pipe when the lever 2 is mover into the osition shown in Fig. 1. as will be herein hilly described.
The head member is provided with a slot extending longitudinally therethrough having oppositely disposed openings therewith in which is mounted a nut 5 in which works the flat threaded shank 4 of the slidable jaw 3, said shank litting tightly within the slot of the head so as to prevent the same from wabhling and it will be seen that by operating the nut 5 the movable head 3 can be adjusted in respect to the pivoted jaw 7 so that the wrench can be moved to take any size pipe from a one inch pipe to a three inch pipe, but it is, of course, understood that the wrench can be made any size desired, this being the preferred size.
The jaw 3 is provided with a serrated jaw face, the teeth of which extend in opposite directions from those on the pivoted jaw tace so that when placed upon a pipe the teeth will engage the same in such a manner that all danger of the pipe turning between the jaws is prevented. It will be also seen that the lever 2 and the pivoted jaw 7 are provided with shoulders 11, 12 adapted to engage the respective ends of the yoke for limiting the movement of the same.
The operation of the wrench is as follows: By moving the lever 2 into position shown in Fig. l it is held there by the tension of the spring and at the same time the pivoted jaw is moved into position as shown so that it will be held in an oblique position in respect to the movable aw 3 whereby the wrench can be readily placed upon the pipe. After the same has been adjusted in the desired position, by pressing the lever downwardly, the beveled end of the lever is brought into engagement with the oblique edge of the pivot jaw so as to cause the same to be forced downwardly into engagement with the pipe as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and as further ressure is applied to the lever the pipe wil be securely gripped between the jaws so that it can be readily turned.
By this construction the distance between the movable jaw and pivoted jaw is decreased as the pressure is applied to the lever so as to cause the teeth of the jaws to embed themselves into the pipe so that the danger ot the wrench slipping on the pipe is prevented.
What I claim is A pipe wrench comprising a slotted head having an integral yoke, a jaw provided with a shank adj ustably mounted in the slot of said head, a pivoted jaw mounted in one end 2 esame' of said yoke provided with an oblique edge and the pivoted aw the angled ends of said having a recess, a lever mounted in the other bowed spring fitting within the recess of the end of said yoke provided with a beveled end respective members.
adapted to engage the oblique edge of said HERBERT C. RAY. 5 jaw, said beveled end being provided with a Witnesses:
recess and a bowed spring having angled OPAL M. BLANLON,
ends arranged between the end of the lever EVA PALMER.
