Description

D. DAHLBERG.
- WRENCH.
APPLICATION TILED MAY 25, 1912.
1,074,412. Patented Spt. 30,1913.
UN irnn STATES PATENT onnion.
DANIEL IDAHLIBERG, OF BBAHAM, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO JOHN I CARLSON, OF BRAI-IAM, MINNESOTA. I
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL DAHLBERG, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Braham, in the county of Isanti and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention has been to devise a simple, compact and eX- ceedingly substantial form of wrench particularly adapted for use as a pipe wrench but susceptible of employment for the general uses to which wrenches are ordinarily put. a i
A wrench embodying the invention is especially advantageous by reason of the adjustability of the same to fit difi erent sized pipes and other work, and by reason of the ease with which thetool may be manipulated by one hand under practical conditions of service.
A further object of the invention has been to supply a wrench of the type above de scribed, in which the gripping action of the jaws is promoted by reason of a peculiar lever movement incidental to the operation of what will be termed hereinafter as a relatively movable jaw of the tool.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Throughout the following detail descrip tion and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to'by like reference characters.
Briefly describing the specific construction of the tool of this invention, 1 denotes a handle, the intermediate portion of which is threaded at 2, one end of which forms a grip and the other end of which has an offstanding angular shaped arm 3 of somewhat L-form. A jaw 4 projects from the outer end of the arm 3 and terminates approximately in alinement with the handle 1. The
parts 3 and 4 together form a U-shaped member between the ends of which, so to speak, operates the relatively movable aw 5. The jaw 5 is integral with a combined lever and handle 6 which extends substantially parallel to the handle 1, the parts 1 and 6 being manipulated in the use of the tool in operating upon a piece of work, such as a pipe, nut, or the like. The free end of the lever' 6 will, of course, be grasped in the operation of the tool and the opposite end portion adjacent to the jaw 5 passes through a slot 7 provided longitudinally of the longitudinal portion of the arm 3. Near the angle at which the jaw 5 projects from the lever 6 and on the outermost portion of said lever is apivot 8 which is journaled in suitable bearings or opemngs in combined fulcrum members and gu1des9. The members 9 are of segmental form and the flat edges of said members are adapted to slide along the arm 3 on the portions of the latter on opposite sides of the slot 7 It will therefore be apparent that the lever 6 is practically fulcrumed upon the member 3 in addition to having slidable connection therewith through the provision of the slot 7 and the mounting afforded by the parts 8 and 9. The threaded portion 2 of the handle 1 has a sleeve or round nut 10 adapted to engage with the tubular end 11 of an adjusting member 11. The adjusting member is preferably of concavo-convex form at its body portion, said body portion being made of sheet metal, and the end portion of the member 11 opposite the tubular portion 11, has spaced cars 11'' pivotally connected by the member 12 with the jaw 5 of the lever 6.
It is contemplated to provide the relatively stationary and movable jaws 4 and 5 respectively with detachable toothed plates 13 and 14 respectively. The plates 18 and 14 are applied to the working surfaces of the jaws 4 and 5 and are provided for the usual purpose of promoting the gripping action of said jaws in the use of the tool.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in adjusting the jaw 5, the sleeve or nut 10 is turned and adapted when moving in one direction to positively cause a relative closing movement of the jaws 4 and 5. By movement of the member 10 in an opposite direction, thereby ,spacing it from the member 11, since the tubular part 11 of the member 11 is loose on the handle 1, the jaw 5 is freely movable by the lever 6 in a direction away from the jaw 4. By reason of the fulcruming action of the lever 6, a slight movement of the jaw 5 is per;
therj aw 5 in respect to the jaw 4.
The adjusting member 11 is of hollow formation, being open at its inner side so as to receive the inner end of the arm 3. By reason of the peculiar formation of the member 11 it is apparent that it surrounds the space between the jaw 5 and the inner terminal of said arm 3 and prevents the lodgment of any obstruction in said space, whereby the free movement of the jaw 5 along the part 3 might be interfered with. To this extent the adjusting member 11 constitutes a guard. Adjacent to the cars 11 the member 11 is formed with a shoulder 11*, which shoulder is adapted to impinge against the jaw 5 to limit the outward movement of the lever (3 away from the handle 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A wrench comprising a shank having a handle at one end and terminating at its other end in a relatively stationary U-shapcd jaw member, said member having a slot extending longitudinally thereof, a relatively movable lever passing through said slot and formed with a jaw movable between the sides of the first mentioned jaw member, an
adjusting member having pivot ears at one end and of hollow form and open only on the side thereof adjacent to thejaw member so as to receive a side portion'of the latter and constituting a guard surrounding the space betweenthe relatively movable jaw and the inner side of said U-shaped jaw member, a pivotal connection between the ears at one end of the said adjusting member and the movable jaw, and adjustable means mounted on the shank interme diate its ends and cooperating with the other end of said adjusting member, said adjusting member being formed with a shoulder adjacent to the ears above mentioned and which shoulder is adapted toimpinge against the inner side of the mov able jaw to thereby limit the outward swinging movement of the lever in respect to said shank, and guide members connected with the lever adjacent to its jaw and movable along the U-shaped jaw member, for the purpose described.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I DANIEL DAHLBERG.
