To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. WILKIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Wrench, of which the following is a specication.
My invention is designed to form a simple, cheap, durable, and easily-operated Wrench, and has for its object to so construct the same that very few parts shall be used in its construction, thereby lessening its liability of getting out of order, but at the same time keeping in view the form of Wrench to obtain the best results.
A further object of my invention is to so arrange the handle, stock, and bits as to enable the operator to secure the greatest distance of swing when working upon radiators or pipes that are closely connected or in such positions that other wrenches have proved ineffectual even when the operator has secured the desired grip upon the pipe.
These and various other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in the follow ing specification, reference being had to the drawings iorming part thereof, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved wrench, showing the jaws gripped upon a pipe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, the handle being shown in elevation; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of the several parts detached.
In the drawings, A represents the handle of any suitable length and having at one end a head B, one side of which terminates in a claw B for engagement with a jaw or stock, and the opposite side of said head terminating in a lug B2, having a hole through which passes a bolt O, that securely holds a swinging jaw D to the lug. This jaw D has one end bifurcated, forming ears d, which straddle the lug B2, and through which passes the bolt C, thereby forming a swinging jaw that is at all times held in place. Upon the outer surface of the lug B2 and formed integral therewith is an extension b, forming a stop to limit the outward movement of the jaw.
The jaw D has a semicircular recess d in its inner face, in which is firmly held a semicircular bit E, made of tempered steel and having its face serrated, as shown. Upon the outer end of the jaw is securely riveted a yoke or clevis D, into which is designed to tit the outer end of a removable jaw F, whose inner end is bifurcated, forming ears ff, made to straddle the claw B to prevent any sidewise movement of the jaw F when the wrench is in operation. The surface of the jaw between and immediately in rear of the ends of the earsfis made of a less thickness than the ears and has its outer surface rounded to form a cam f', upon which the claw B engages to bind the jaws F and D together. The jaw F is also litted with a bit-section G, similar in construction and arrangement to the bit E.
The operation of my improved Wrench is as follows: When a pipe, for instance, is to be turned, the jaw D is put under the pipe and the end of the jaw F inserted in the clevis D', the bifurcated end dropped down over the claw B, the handle in the meantime being turned in such position as to allow the cam portion f' of the jaw to escape the point of the claw. Then by raising the handle the claw engages the cam, which firmly closes the jaws together and upon the pipe, when by a further movement of the handle the pipe is easily turned.
I may state that the claw has its face that engages the cam tempered to avoid wear.
From the foregoing it will be seen that only the amount of pressure is put upon the pipe that is absolutely necessary to secure a tight grip and when that is attained the further movementof the handle will cause the pipe to turn.
My wrench may be fitted to any size pipe by using a removable jaw having a larger or smaller bit-section, as the case may require, thus avoiding the necessity of having several sizes of wrenches.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A wrench comprising a handle, a swinging jaw held thereto, a clevis formed on the free end of said jaw and aremovable jaw having one end itting loosely in said clevis and its other end engaged by the handle to close it, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wrench, the combination of a handle having an enlarged head on one end thereA IOC of, one side of the head terminating in a, lug,'
the opposite side terminating in a claw, a jaw pivoted at one end to the lug and having itsl opposite end formed with a yoke, a removable jaw held at one end in said yoke and. having its opposite end bifurcated to straddle the claw, and adapted to be engaged thereby, substantially as shown and described.
