PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,468, dated February 16, 1886.
Application filed October 29, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN BoNNIoH- mm and MIOHAELR. CHRYSTAL, of N ewburg, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Trenches, of which the following is a description.
Our invention is an improvement in pipewrenches; and it consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my wrench. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the handle. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the swinging connection. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the gripping band-chain. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively side and plan views of a wrench, illustrating a modification; and Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the pivot-pins.
The handle A has its head end formed with forwardly-projected lugs a a, arranged one above the other and perforated at a, to receive the pivot-pins. At the juncture of these lugs with the handle the end of the latter is curved in an arc struck from the pivot-openings of the lugs. The upper lug, a, it will be noticed, projects, preferably, in advance of lug a, so that in operation the end of the band carried by the lower lug may be swung in a curve approximately concentric with the line of motion of that end of the band carried by the outer end of the swinging connection as will be presently described.
To the lug a is pivoted one end of the swinging connection B, which end is bifurcated to fit over such lug. At its outer end the connection is formed with a base-plate, b, and with jaws b projecting up from the opposite sides of the base-plate. The inner faces of these jaws are formed with ribs 22*, having their outer ends rounded at bito facilitate the entrance of the link, and having notches b at or near their inner ends, to provide seats for the lateral studs of the band 0. This band is formed of a series of links, most or all of which have lateral studs 0 by which to engage the ribs b of the swinging connection. These lugs are preferably the ends of the pivot-bolt which connects the several links. oted at their opposite ends on the outer sides of the chain grip and the lug a, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 3. The opposite end of the grip-band maybe held by any pair of its studs being engaged with ribs 12 so as to properly embrace any ordinarysized pipe.
In operation the handle is operated reciprocally, the band gripping at one and slipping at the other stroke, as is usual.
In order to hold the swinging connection in position for use and prevent its falling back during the reverse movement of the handle, we provide the spring E, secured at one end to the handle and bearing at its other end on the swinging connection. The arrangement of this spring is most clearly shown in Fig. 2. The pivots which connect the lugs a and a to the swinging connections and links D are preferaaby tapered pins F, as shown.
Manifestly the form of grippingband may be modified, as well as that of the swinging connection. \Ve show such a modification in Figs. 5 and.6. In this construction the grip ping-band is formed of two sections, G H, jointed together at one end. The outer end of the section H is pivoted to the lug a, and the outer end of section G has a hook, g, for engagement with the swinging connection, which in the modified construction has a crossbar at its swinging end. Where desired the sections may be made of spring metal, so as to conform closely to pipes of different diameters.
It will be seen that our handle is adapted for use with either form of grip-band, and that where desired the sectional grip may be used for pipes of substantially the same size and the chain for larger or smaller sizes, being easily interchangeable by reason. of the pivot-pins, as before described. \Ve prefer the chain grip, and also to connect it with the lug a by the serrated links, which, fitting on opposite sides of both the chain and lug, increase the width of the grip and operate to preserve the arrangement of the handle at true right angle with the pipe, as is desired.
Having thusdescribed our invention, what we claim as new is- 1. A handle for pipe-wrenches, having its inner end or head adapted for connection with a gripping-band, and provided with a spring secured at one end to thesaid handle and having its other or free end extended over the head thereof, substantially as and for the pun poses specified.
2. As a new and improved article of1nanufacture, the Wrench-handle, substantially as herein described and shown, having at its inner end or head perforated lugs a a, arranged one above the other, and having a spring, E, secured at one end and having its other end extended over the lug a, as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with a handle having its butt-end provided with perforated lugs arranged one above the other, of a swinging con nection pivoted at one end to the upper lug, a gripping-band connected at one end with the lower lug and having its upper end detachably connected with the swinging connection, and a spring secured at one end to the handle and having its other end arranged to bear against the swinging connection, substantially as set forth.
