Description
H. c; sTouFrE Pipe Wrenches.
Patented March 3.1874.
Z 7@ van Z'af TINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM C. STOUFFER, OF CANFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,259, dated March 3, 1874; application led February 20, 1874.
.To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HIRAM C. STOUFFER, of Oaniield, in the county of Mahoning and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Wrench; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pipe-wrench, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring` to the annexed drawing, which represents a side view of my wrench.
A represents thehandle of my wrench, formed at its upper end with a stationary jaw, B, which may be either curved, more or less, on its inner side, as shown, or it may be made straight, the same as `the jaw of an ordinary monkeywrench. The inner side of the jaw Bis corru gated or toothed, as shown at c. The handle A is slotted longitudinally for a certain distance, and in this slot is pivoted a block, C, which extends on the same side of the handle as the jaw B. The outer end of the block C is forked, for the reception of the nut D. `B represents the movable jaw of my wrench, formed on the upper end of a shank, E, made squarecornered for a suitable distance, and the lower end provided with screw-threads. This part of the shank E passes through the fork of the block C and through the nut D, so Y that by turning said nut the jaw B maybe moved out or in, the same as the movable jaw of an ordinary monkey-wrench. The' upper surface of the movable jaw B may be either curved or straight, and corrugated or toothed, as shown. Above the pivot-point of the block C in the slotted handle A is pivoted a lever, G, the up per end of which is curved outward and forms an eye, b, and the shank E ofthe movable jaw passes through said eye.
By throwing the lower end of the lever Gr outward, the movable jaw B is thrown outward in the opposite direction and downward from the stationary jaw B. The movable jaw being then moved out or in by means of the nut l), the lower end of the lever is pressed toward the handle, throwing the movable jaw B inward, and at the same time upward, by the block C turning on its pivot, thus exerting' a double leverage on the movable jaw, to iirinly clamp the pipe between the jaws B and B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byv Letters Patent, is-
lhe combination of the slotted handle A with` jaw B, the forked pivoted block C with arm d, the nutD, shank E with jaw B, and the pivoted lever G with eye b, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1874. l
HIRAM C. S'IOUFFER. Witnesses:
