Description
E. B. PRIZELLE. PIPE WRENCH (No ModeL No. 561,578. Patented June 9, 1896.
NITE TATES ERASMUS B. FRIZELLE, OF STERLING, KANSAS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,578, dated June 9, 1896.
Application filed December 31, 1895. Serial No. 573,908- (No model.)
1'0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERASMUS B. FRIZELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-WVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe wrenches or tongs; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap wrench applicable to numerous uses and which can be composed of few parts and those so arranged as to grasp a pipe of any required dimensions and size.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the application of my wrench. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawin gs by letters, A designates what I term the fixed jaw, terminating in an operating-lever A. This jaw is serrated, as shown at a,
for a greater or less portion of its inner surface, and at the extreme end thereof is an opening through which passes the bolt B.
This bolt passes also through an opening in the movable jaw O, which is curved, as shown, and has the inner face of its outer arm serrated, as shown at O. The bolt after passing through these two jaws receives a nut D. The movable jaw is thus pivoted so as to move freely on its pivot with relation to the other jaw, and in use it is only necessary to place the pipe or other article in the space between the two jaws and by pressing upon the one the pipe or other article will be firmly held, and by movement of the lever downward the grip will be made firmer and the pipe may be readily turned.
What I claim as new is- 1. The combination with the operating-lever provided with the rearwardly-eurved extension serrated 011 its inner edge, of the substantially V-shaped jaw having its outer arm serrated on its inner edge, its inner arm being pivotally secured to the outer end of said extension, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the operating-1e- Ver provided with the rearwardly-curved extension serrated on its inner edge, of the substantially V-shaped jaw having its outer arm serrated on its inner edge, its inner arm being pivotally secured to the outer end of said extension, the adjacent ends of the lever and jaw being overlapped and connected by a bolt passed therethrough, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERASMUS B. FRIZELLE. Vitnesscs:
J. W. McORAcKEN, GEORGE WAGNER.
