Description

S. B. HELVIK. WRENCM APPLICATIONFILED APR. 29.1918.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918 SIG-VARI) B. HELVIK, 0F WAGO, MONTANA.
WRENCH.
Application filed April 29, 1918. Serial No. 231,475.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIGVARD B. HELVIK, a citizen of Norway, and a resident of Waco,
Vin the county of Yellowstone and State of Montana, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of the pivoted jaw type, and an obj ect of the invention is to provide a wrench structure embodying a handle and a rigid jaw carried thereby, at one side of one end of the handle with which rigid jaw a pivoted jaw co-acts, and to shape the inner operative face of the pivoted jaw, whereby, upon adjustment of the pivoted jaw, the wrench may be employed for gripping nuts, bolts, or pipes of various diameters and sizes and further to provide means for holding the pivoted jaw in adjusted position which means is held securely locked, when gripping the handle of the wrench, thereby materially decreasing the liability of accidental slipping of the l 4pivoted jaw.
More specifically, the invention comprehends the provision of a wrench as specified on a portion of the outer surface of the pivoted jaw of which is formed a plurality of ratchet teeth which are engaged by a pawl that is pivotally carried by the handle of the wrench and which is operated, through the medium of a pivotally mounted operating lever in such manner that when the handle of the wrench is gripped for turning an article gripped between the jaws of the wrench, the pawl will be held securely in engagement with any one of the ratchet teeth to prevent accidental slipping movement of the movable jaw.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which shows a perspective v iew of the improved wrench, and which forms a part of this specification.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates'the handle of the wrench which is preferably rectangular in cross section and has a rigid jaw 2 formed at one end of the same and slightly to one side of the wrench handle. The inner operative face 3 of the rigid jaw 2 is straight and parallel with the edges of the handle 1. The jaw 2 may be serrated, as indicated at 4 if it is so desired.
A movable jaw 5 is pivotally connected by Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1918.
means of a pin 6 to the end of the handle, so that its inner operative face 7 will be directly opposite of the face 3 of the rigid j aw 2. The inner operative face 7 of the movable jaw 5 is cut to form a pair of concaved portions 8 and 9 which have unequal radii. The
smaller 0f the concaved portions 8 curves downwardly from the pivots of the jaw aud terminates in the outer edge of an abrupt transverse shoulder 10 while the larger concaved portion 9 curves upwardly from the lower free edge of the wrench and terminates at the inner edge of the transverse shoulder 10. The concaved portions 8 and 9 are both eccentric of the curvature of the outer surface of the pivoted jaw 5.
The jaw 5 has a plurality of ratchet teeth 1l formedupon its outer surface and extending downwardly along the outer surface from a point in close proximity to the inner pivoted edge of the jaw. The jaw is preferably pivotally connected to the handle through the medium of a pair ofl ears 12 formed upon the inner end of the'jaw which engage one upon each side of the lower end of the handle 1 and through which the pivot pin 6 extends.
A pawl 14 is pivotally carried by the handle 1 near the lower end of the same and it has a head 15 which engages any one of the ratchet teeth 11 for holding the jaw 5 in adjusted position. A spring 17 is carried by the handle 1 and engages the pawl 1A for holding the head 15 thereof in yieldable engagement with one of the ratchet teeth 11.
A rod 18 is connected to the pawl 14, upon the opposite side of its pivot from'the head 15 and this rod extends upwardly, being connected to a hand-operated lever 19. The hand-operated lever 19 is pivoted at one end, as shown at 20 to the handle, and the rod 18 is connected to this lever intermediate of the pivot 20 of the lever and the thumb or finger plate 21 thereof which is bent upwardly from the lever and twisted to lie at right angles to the face of the lever and at one side of one edge of the handle 1 so that when the handle is gripped, for turning a nut, bolt or other article gripped between the faces of the jaws 2 and 5, a finger or thumb of thev provision of the plurality of ratchet teeth ll, and the payvl lil, the jaw 5 may be held in any one of a number of predetermined adjusted positions With respect to the rigid jaw ior gripping various articles.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed is:
l. In a Wrench, the combination, of a handle, a rigid jaw formed upon said handle to one end of the same, a movable jaw pivotally connected to said handle, the inner operative face of said movable jaw provided with a pair of concaved portions having unequal radii, a plurality of ratchet teeth formed upon the outer surface of said movable jaw, and a pawl carried by said handle for engagement ivith one ot said. ratchet teeth to hold the pivoted jaw in any one of a number of predetermined adjusted positions, means for yieldably holding said paivl in engagement With any one of said ratchet teeth, and an operating lever for said pawl pivotally connected to said handle and arranged whereby a grip upon the handle Will operate the lever to hold the pavvl. in engagement with any one of said ratrhet teeth, against accidental movement.
2. In a Wrench, the combination, of a handle, a rigid jaw formed upon said handle to one side oi' one end of the same, a movable aiv -pivotally connected to the handle,
the inner face of said rigid jaa7 being parallel With the edges of said handle and serrated` the inner operative face of said movable jaw provided With a pair of concaved portions having unequal radii, the smaller of said concaved portions curving` outwardly Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
from the pivot of the jaw and terminating at the outer edge of a transverse shoulder, the larger of said Concaved portions curving inwardly from the free edge of the jaw anc terminating at the innermost edge of said shoulder, said inner operative face and said movable jaw being serrated, and means earried by said handle for engagement with said pivoted jaw to hold said pivoted jaw in any one of a number of predetermined adjusted positions.
3. ln a Wrench, the combination, of a. handle, a rigid jaw formed upon said handle to one side of one end of the same, a. movable jaw pivot-ally connected to the handle, the inner face of said rigid jaw being parallel With the edges of said handle and serrated, the inner operative face of said movable jaw provided With a pair of concaved portions having unequal radii, the smaller of said concaved portions curving outwardly from the pivot of the jaw and terminating at the outer edge of a transverse shoulder, the larger or said conoaved portions curving inwardly from the free edge oi' the aw and terminating at the innermost edge of said shoulder, said inner operative face and said movable jaiv being serrated, means Carried by said handle for engagement With said pivoted jaw to hold said pivoted j aw in any one of a number of predetermined adjusted positions, and operating means for said last named means arranged whereby a gri-p upon said handle Will hold said janv engaging means against accidental movement.
