A. P. QUIGLEY. PIPE WRENCH.
No. 440,501. Patented Nov. 11,1890.
IVJIW'ESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRElV PATRICK QUIGLEY, OF JAMESTOVN, NEW YORK.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,501, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed August 21, 1890. Serial No. 362,641- (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW PATRICK QUIG ,LEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- IVrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved pipe-wrench which shall be simple and economical in construction and which will efiectually perform the work for which it is intended.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a rectangular bar having ahandle 2, and provided at the other end with a head 3, provided with a number of teeth or serrations 4. This head at its inner end is recessed, as seen at 5, forming two lugs 6, having apertures 7 to receive the pivot 8.
The numeral 10 designates a yoke having a rectangular opening 12, so as to embrace the bar 1. This opening is somewhat larger than the bar, so that the latter may play therein. The upper end of the yokeis provided witha lug 13, having a central aperture, and fits between the lugs 6, and is connected therewith by means of the pivot 8, formingahinge-joint.
The yoke 10 is provided with an extension 15, also provided with a rectangular aperture, through which passes the bar 9, provided upon two opposite sides with screw-threads 16, which engage witha correspondingly-threaded milled nut 17 which fits in said extension 15, which is recessed for that purpose. The outer end of bar 9 is provided with a projecting head or jaw 18, provided with teeth 19.
The numeral 20 designates a flat spring secured at one end to the yoke 10, its free end resting upon bar 1.
The operation will be readily understood.
The pipe is grasped by the heads or jaws 3 and 18, beingadjusted thereto by means of the nut 17 and threaded bar 9. By turning the bar I by means of the handle in one direction the pipe is firmly gripped and can be turned. By reversing the movement of the handle the said bar will turn upon its pivot or hinge, thus releasing the grip upon the pipe and allowing the jaws to be moved to take a new hold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-=- The combination, with the rectangular bar having a hoe d or jaw provided with teeth or serrations, of the yoke embracing the said bar and hinged thereto, the extension of said yoke having a rectangular opening, a threaded bar having a gripping-jaw, a threaded nut engaging with said bar and a spring secured to the yoke and bearing against the bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDRE W PATRICK QUIGLEY.
