PIPE WRENCH.
I No. 562,101. Patente d Junel6, 1896.
- WITNESSES INVENTOR M H. Qua/ram UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
tEORGE D. STEVENS, OF METOALF, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CLAYTON B. ELLIOTT, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,101, dated June 16, 1896. Application filed October 11, 1895. Serial a. 565,410. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,-
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Metcalf, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side View of wrench unclamped, clip in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view of wrench clamped.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective pipe-wrench, capable of ready adjustment and of a strong and positive grip; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts,
all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the fixed jaw of the wrench, which terminates a shank B, and is of convex serrated form.
C designatesthe movable jaw, having a concave serrated face of greater radius than the j aw A. Said movable jaw is connected to the shank B by means of a clip or yoke D, which loosely embraces said shank, and in which the jaw O is pivoted at c.
E designates a lever which is pivoted in the clip or yoke D, and which is provided with a head beyond its fulcrum, said head having a projection or cam f thereon and a tooth g.
The projection or cam f is arranged to act upon a lower portion H of the stationary jaw below the pivot thereof in such a manner that when the lever is closed against the shank B the said jaw is pressed toward the stationary jaw; but when said lever is opened away from the shank the movable jaw is permitted to rock away from the stationary jaw.
The tooth g is arranged to engage any one of a series of notches 7a in the rear face of the shank B, the engagement being sufliciently loose topermit the tooth to rock in the notch as the lever is opened. When said lever is opened to its full extent, the said tooth is rocked out of the notch, and the clip or yoke can be moved up or down on the shank to vary the adjustment.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wrench, the combination with the con- Vex stationary jaw terminating a shank having a series of notches thereon, and the movable concave jaw, of a clip or yoke loosely embracing said shank and in which the mov able jaw is pivoted, and a lever also pivoted in said yoke or clip and having a head adapted to engage and operate said movable jaw, and a tooth arranged to engage any one of the notches of the shank, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE I). STEVENS.
Witnesses: I
M. LOFTIN, T. I. RITTERBACK.
