THOMAS A. CASEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent,
Patented Oct. 13, 1908.
Application led Novembel` 1, 1907. Serial No. 400,192.
To @Il whom it mayconcern:
13e 1t known .that I, THOMAS A. CASEY, a cltlzen of vthe United States, residing at Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, Pennsyl-- vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches, and its primary obj ect is to provide a wrench capale of being quickly adjusted and firmly secured in adjusted position.
A further object of the invention is, to provide a wrench having a movable jaw adapted to be adjusted either by moving the jaw bodily by hand, or by the revolution of a loosely supported screw extending through said jaw. y
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification and its novel features will be set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the movable jaw, with parts in elevation.
The reference numeral 1 designates a lhandle from the upper end of which project two parallel rods 2 and 8 preferably formed integral with the handle, and serving as the shank of the wrench.
To the upper ends of the rods 2 and 3 is secured a fixed aw 4, formed on its under surface with a bearing 5 for the up er end of a screw 6, the lower end 7 of wiich is supported in a Socket 8 formed in the upper end of the handle 1. A knurled disk 9 is secured upon the Screw 6 adjacent to its lower end by means of which the screw may be readily turned.
Supported u on the rods 2 and 3 is a Slide 10 formed wit a jaw 11 constituting the movable jaw of the wrench. This slide is formed with parallel circular openings 12 for the passage of the rods 2 and, and a central opening for the passage of the screw 6.
In assembling the parts of the device, the slide 10 is slipped upon the rods 2 and 3 and screw 6, and the fixed jaw 4 is then secured upon the rods in any suitable manner.
The Slide 10 is formed on each side with a slot 13 and with a pair of perforated ears 14, between which is pivotally secured by a pin L15 a perforated lug 16 projecting from a clamping jaw 17. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 .these jaws 17 are o positely disposed and their inner faces are 'ormed with semiecircular recesses 18 provided with screw-threads to `engage the threads of the screw 6. Each of the clamping jaws 17 is provided with an upwardly projecting arm 19 extending into a vertical recess 20 communicating with the slots 13. Between the arms 19 and the walls 21 of the slideare interposed curved springs 22, the lower ends of which are riveted or otherwise secured to the walls 21, while their up er free ends bear against the arms 19 and hoifl the threaded jaws 17 in engagement with the screw 6.
The utility and operation of the improvement will be readily understood. The slide carrying the movable jaw 11 is normally stationary through the engagement of its springvpressed jaws withthe screw 6. To adjust the movable jaw the upper ends of the arms 19 are compressed to release the threaded jaws 17 from the Screw, after which the slide 10 and jaw 11 may be adjusted with relation to the fixed jaw 4. When pressure is removed from the arms 19, the springs 22 force the clamping jaws into engagement with the screw, thus holding the slide in its adjusted position.
Asa supplemental adjusting means for the movable jaw, I have provided the knurled thumb-piece or disk 9, and it will be apparent that by turning the screw 6 by means of this disk the slide may be adjusted in either direction through the engagement of the screw with the threads of the clamping jaws 17 The invention includes all such modifications and variations in the details of construction as may be resorted to Without departing from the terms and scope of the claim.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A wrench comprising a handle, vertically extending rods formed integral with the upper end of the handle and arranged in parallelism with respect to each other, a fixed jaw carried by the upper ends of said rods, a rotatable threaded bar interposed between said rods and journaled at its ends in the jaw and handle, a slide having an elongated longitudinal opening, said opening having rounded end walls, said slide mounted upon the rods and bar and said rods positioned in close proximity to the rounded end Walls of said opening, said slide further provided with a rectangular opening in each side connnunieating with said longitudinal opening and said slide further having in the outer face of each side a vertically extending recess ter- Ininating at its lower end in a rectangular opening, the upper end of said slide constituting a jaw and said slide further provided at each side of a recess at the lower end thereof with an apertured lug, rectangular clamping jaws mounted in said rectangular openings and extending in said longitudinal opening and having the inner face thereof provided with a seinicircular groove with the wall thereof threaded to engage said har, a shank having its lower end formed integral with each of the jaws approximately centrally thereof' at one side, said shanks having the inajor portions thereof extending 1n dll'- ferent planes from that in which theI jaws ex- 12o l the Shanks to the said lugs and s )rines hav 2 h 7 h l ing their lower ends lived to the inner walls ol said recesses and their upper ends engaging the upper ends of the sha-nhs.
In testimony whereof l. allx my signature in the presence ol two witnesses.
