To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Winmx. O. KYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Midvale, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the object of my linvention is to provide a quick acting wrench of a simple, durable and inexpensive construction. l
My invention aims to obviate the necessity of using screw threads and a nut as an adjusting medium by providing a novel mechanism that can be easily and quickly adjusted for setting the jaws of the wrench a prescribed distance apart. To this end, I employ a toothed shank and a movable jaw, said jaw having a gripping member for engaging said shank and holding the movable jaw in a fixed position. The movable jaw and the gripping piece thereof are moved in unison through mechanism located in the handle of the wrench, a portion of this mechanism being independently moved for moving the gripping member irrespective of the movable jaw.
The detail construction entering into my invent-ion will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings F igure 1 is an elevation of my wrench, Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly broken away, and partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line -:o of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a shank having a xed jaw 2 and a lower contracted end 3 provided with a longitudinal slot 4:. The shank 1 upon its inner edge is provided with teeth 5.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a .i movable jaw 6 having an opening 7 to accommodate said shank. That portion of the jaw 6 confronting the teeth 5 of the shank 1 is provided with a recess 8 for a gripping member having oppositely disposed toothed sides 9. One of the toothed sides 9 is adapted for engaging the teeth 5.-y The other toothed side is provided in case t-he opposite side becomes worn. positely disposed flat sides 10 for providing clearance for the jaw 6 when the latter is shifted upon the shank. In this connection it will be stated that the gripping member is turned until one of its smooth sides is positioned in parallelism with respect to the teeth of the shank. The gripping member is mounted upon a rod 11 journaled in the jaw 6, said rod being located parallel to the shank 1. The lower end of the rod 11 is loosely mounted in a head 12 and directly beneath said head is provided with a crank 13. The head 12 is provided with a contracted portion 14 extending through the slot l of the shank 1, said contracted portion having a lug 15 to which a retractile spring 16 is secured, the opposite end of said spring being secured to the lug 17 car ried by the shank 1. The object of the spring 16 is to normally hold the jaw 6 in proximity to the fixed jaw 2, when one of the flat sides 10 is presented to or confronts the teeth of the shank 1. The lower end of the shank 1, the spring 16, and the head 12 are housed by a handle formed of three sections, the outer sections 18, 19, and the intermediate section 19, The intermediate section 19a is hollow. The said sections are secured together by the hold fast devices 20. The sections 18 and 19 of the handle are longitudinally. slotted as at 21 to .permit of the crank 13 being moved whereby the rod 11 is shifted and the gripping member moved into or out of engagement with the teeth of the shank 1 1.
In order that the jaw 6 can be moved a prescribed distance, I graduate the outer section 19, as at 22, and provide the head 12 with a pointer 23. If the outer section 19 is graduated in inches, the exact distance of the movable jaw 6 from the fixed jaw 2 can be determined by referring to the pointer 23.
A quarter of a rotation of the crank 13 moves the teeth of the gripping member out of engagement with the teeth 5 of the shank 1, and the spring 16 immediately moves the jaw 6 towards the fixed jaw 2. By again turning the crank 13 a quarter of a revolution, one of the toothed sides 9 of the gripping member can be moved into engagement with the toothed shank.
My wrench is constructed of strong and durable metal, and while in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, I would have it understood that the elements therein can be varied,y or changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. A wrench comprising a toothed shank, a fixed jaw carried thereby, said shank having the lower end thereof slotted, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon suchy shank,- a rod journaled in said movable jawl and extending downwardly parallel with said shank, a gripping member mounted upon said rod within .said movable jaw for engaging said toothed shank, a head arranged at the lower end of said rod and extending through the slot of said shank, a spring ,connecting with said head and with said shank for normally holding said movable jaw, a crank carried by the lower end of said rod for moving Isaid gripping member, a sectional handle embracing the lower end of said shank, said handle having longitudinalslots formed therein to permit of said crank being moved, and a pointer carried by said head for designating the distance between said movable jaw and said fixed jaw, substantially as described.
2. A wrench comprising a toothed shank, a fixed jaw carried thereby, said shank having the lower end thereof slotted, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank, a rod journaled in said movable jaw and extending downwardly parallel with said shank, a gripping member mounted-upon said rod within saidv movable jaw for engaging said toothed shank, a head arranged at the lower end of said rod and extending through the slot of said shank, a spring connecting with said head and with Said shank for normally holding said movable jaw, a crank carriedby the lower end of said rod for moving said gripping member, and a sectional handle embracing the lower end of said shank, said handle having longitudinal slots formed therein to permit of said crank being moved.
