WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 26, 1916,
Application filed May 24, 1915. Serial No. 30,159.
To all whom z'zf may concern Be it lmown that I, FRANK Pnoxor, a citizen of the United States, residing at v Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding jaw wrenches, and has for its object to provide a device of this character whereby the sliding jaw of the wrench can be quickly adjusted to the desired position with relation to the fixed jaw.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a fixed jaw integrally formed with its handle, the said handle being hollow to receive the shank of the slidable jaw, said shank being formed with teeth and the handle being provided with a pivoted toothed wheel which co-acts with the teeth of said shank, while also provided upon the handle is a slidable wheel engaging member which may be brought into or out of engagement with the said wheel to permit of the adjustment of the jaws and into engagement with the wheel to lock the jaws in an adjusted position.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a wrench of this class which shall include the desirable features of simplicity, cheapness of construction and ease and accuracy in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse section approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a detail top plan view of the wrench, the lock and its housing being removed, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sliding locking member and its housing, looking toward the under face of the same.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the handle for the wrench, which, in the present instance, is hollow or otherwise provided with a longitudinally extending, preferably sub- Stantially rectangular bore, indicated by the numeral 2. The wrench has one of its ends formed with a head or jaw 3, the boreof the opening extending through the said jaw.
The numeral 4 designates the movablev jaw, and 5 the shank thereof. rlhe shankr is preferably rectangular in cross section, so as to be snugly received within the bore of the handle, and the said shank has one of its edges provided with teeth 6. The
handle is formed with an opening which commimicates with its bore and is further provided with outwardly extending ears 7, one disposed at each side of the said opening, while pivotally connected, as at 8, between the said ears 7 is a peripherally toothed wheel 9, the teeth of the said wheel co-engaging with the teeth of the shank of the movable jaw. The handle, to the rear of the wheel, is formed with a longitudinal channel 10 within which is adapted to be received a slidable locking member or dog 11. The dog has its outer face enlarged, and provided with teeth 12, which are adapted to co-act with the teeth of the wheel 9. The inner face of the dog, to the rear of its teeth 12, is formed with a shoulder 13, one end of which is contacted by a flat spring 14, the said spring having its opposite end secured to the said underface of the dog.
The numeral 15 designates a cap or housing which is removably connected to the handle, the same being provided upon its outer face with a centrally disposed elongated opening 16, and the upper face of the body of the dog 11 is provided with a pin 17 which passes through the said opening 16. The body of the dog is further provided with a threaded opening 18 arranged forward of the pin 17 and the numeral 19 indicates a finger piece which has its outer face milled and which is provided with suitable openings, one to receive the pin 17 and the other alining with the threaded opening 18. Passing through the last mentioned opening in the :linger piece 19 is the threaded shank 20 of a spring adjusting member 21, the said member binding upon the outer face of the spring 14 to force the same into frictional engagement with the wall of the channel and as a consequence regulate the frictional engagement between the spring and the lower wall of the channel, and consequently permitting of the dog being locked when the said screw is adjusted either in engaging position with the wheel or out of engaging position there* with.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a wrench of the class described, a stationary member including a hollow handle, a movable member including a shank arranged within the handle, said shank being provided with transverse teeth, a handle having an opening communicating with its bore, ears extending outwardly of the handle at the opposite sides of the opening, a peripheral toothed wheel journaled between the ears and the said wheel engaging with the teeth ofthe shank, the handle having a longitudinal Channel eX- tending from the opening therein, a dog having its body portion arranged in the channel, Said dog having one of its ends enlarged and provided with teeth, the under- Copies of this patent may be obtained for face of the dog having a-transverse shoulder, a iat spring contacting with the shoulder and having its opposite end secured to the underface of the dog away from the said shouldena cap secured to the wrench and overlying the body of the dog, Said cap having an elongated opening, a pin upon the dog extending through the opening, said dog having a threaded opening opposite the pin, a thumb piece upon the dog and overlying the cap and engaged by the pin, and a threaded element passing through Vthe thumb piece, the threaded opening in the dog and contacting with the spring.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
