Application filed June 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SI-Ios'rmM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has relation essentially to a metal working tool and has for its 0bject the provision of a wrench particularly designed for use in connection with pipe, rods or other work having a rounded surface and required to be firmly gripped when turned.
A further purpose of the invention is the provision of a tool of the character hereinbefore mentioned which is durable, readily adjustable to a given size and capable of being cheaply manufactured and which admits of replacements when necessary being made at a comparatively: small cost.
With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention as claimed may be resorted to when desired.
Referring to the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pipe wrench embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view, the slide and the pivoted jaw being in section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the slide.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and inclicated in all the views of the drawingsby the same reference characters.
The wrench comprises a handle 1, a slide 2 and a pivoted jaw 3. The handle 1 has a fixed jaw 4 at its active end, such jaw having its gripping face inclined. and toothed. A portion of the handle 1 is formed with screw thread segments 5 which cooperate with a nut 6 to hold the slide in the required adjusted position. A scale graduation 7 is provided upon a side of the handle to enable the slide and pivoted jaw to he set Specification of Letters Patent.

when adapting the tool to a piece of work of given size. The jaw 4 may be formed in any manner and the toothed portion is hardened so as to withstand the usage to which it is subjected in the application of the tool.
The slide 2 is formed with a longitudinal opening 8 through which the handle 1 passes. A transverse opening 9 is formed in the rear portion of the slide 2 and inter sects with the longitudinal opening 8 and receives the nut 6. The sides of the slide are formed with openings 10, thereby admitting of the slide being of a minimum weight consistent with strength as well as providing for a ready observation of the scale, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1. The slide 2 is formed at its outer forward corner with a rounded projection 11 which constitutes one element of a hinge or pivotal joint between the movable jaw 3 and the slide 2. The shoulders 12 formed at the inner end or base of the rounded projection. 11 are made half round to receive the half round projections 13 at the pivotal end of the jaw 3. Shoulders 1 1 are formed at opposite ends of the depressed or concave shoulders 12 and other shoulders 15 are formed at opposite ends of the half round projections 13. The shoulders 14L and 15 limit the vibratory movements of the pivoted jaw incident to the ratchet action of the wrench when in operation. A spring 16 is secured at one end to the slide 2 and its opposite end exerts a pressure upon the pivoted jaw 3 to hold the same in a given position. The rounded projection 11 is formed with a protuberant portion 17 which is constructed to receive and hold the end of the spring 16 whereby it is attached to the slide. The slot 18 formed in the protuberant portion 17 extends through opposite sides of the protuberance 17 to admit of the springbeing placed in position or removed. by a lateral sliding movement.
The jaw 3 is hollow upon its inner side, as indicated at 19, thereby accommodating and receiving the spring 16. The jaw 3 is provided with a bit 20 which is hardened and toothed so as to withstand wear and prevent slipping. The bit 20 is preferably detachably fitted to the jaw and is retained in place by means of a pin 21 which passes through registering openings formed in the shank of the bit and in the side walls of the jaw bordering upon the space 19. The

The scale 7 admits of setting the tool to work of given or standard size, thereby avoiding the objectionable feature of setting the tool by test or guess work. The movable jaw is adjusted by means of the a nut 6 and is held in the adjusted position by means of the nut 6 and thread segments 5.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A tool of the character described com prising a handle having a jaw at one end, a slide mounted upon the handle and formed at its outer forward corner with a rounded projection having concave shoulders at opposite sides of the rounded projection, such concave shoulders terminating in opposed stop shoulders, a hollow jaw formed with spaced half round projections to embrace opposite sides of the rounded projection of the slide and having opposed stop shoulders at the ends of the half round projections to coact with the stop shoulders of the slide, said hollow jaw extending from the said projections beyond the end of the handle and into the plane of the same and provided at its free end with a bit opposed to the handle, and a spring attached atone end to the rounded projection of the slide and housed within the hollow jaw and having its outer end bearing upon the bit to normally hold said jaw in a given position.
