WRENEH. APPLICATX'ON FILED SEPT. 21. 1918'.
Patented Feb.18,1919.
JOSEPH A. SGHANNO, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WRENCH.
Application filed September 27. 1918. Serial No. 255.922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. SCl-IANNO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to in wrenches, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensive wrench for use in places where it is impossible to swing the handle in the usual manner, the wrench being especially useful aboard ship.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a handle provided With a plunger movable longitudinally thereof, with means connecting the plunger and the jaws of the wrench to convert the longitudinal movement of the plunger into a reciprocatory movement of the jaws.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wrench embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view; and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the plunger.
Referring to the drawings, in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the handle of the wrench is indicated at 10. This handle is tubular in form and is diametrically slotted for a distance of approximately two-thirds its length as shown at 11..
Mounted in the outer end of the slotted end of the handle upon a pivot 12, are jaws 13, which are adapted to receive the nut or other element to be turned. These jaws are rigid with respect to one another and have projecting therefrom an arm 14.
Mounted within the. opposite end of the handle 10 is a plunger 15, which is preferably tubular in form. The inner end of this plunger is slotted and formed with gibs 16, which operate in the slot 11 so as to provide a cross head for the inner end of the plunger. Pivotally secured to this cross head is one end of a connecting bar 18, the opposite end of this bar being pivoted as at 19 to the inner improvements Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.-
In the use of the wrench the jaws are placed upon the nut and the outer end of the plunger 15 struck with a hammer or other instrument. This forces the plunger inward and moves the jaw at the pivot 12. The pivot 19 may be moved to either side of the handle 10 so as to regulate the direction of rotation of the nut.
It will be seen that the above described invention provides a simple and eflicient means for converting a longitudinal movement into a reciprocatory movement, permitting of the use of the wrench in places in which the use of an ordinary wrench is impossible.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes as will properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A wrench embodying a handle, jaws carried thereby, a plunger movable longitudinally of the handle and a toggle connecting the jaws and plunger for converting the longitudinal movement of the plunger into a reciprocatory movement of the jaws.
2. A wrench embodying a tubular handle slotted through a portion of its length, jaws pivotally mounted at the outer extremity of said slot, a plunger movable longitudinal in the handle and a rod connecting the jaws and plunger for converting longitudinal movement of the plunger into reciprocatory movement of the jaws.
3. A wrench embodying a tubular handle diametrically slotted throughout a portion of its length, jaws pivotally mounted at the outer extremity of said slot, a plunger movable longitudinally in the handle, a cross head carried at the inner end of the plunger and guided in said slot and a rod having one end pivotally secured to the cross head and the other end pivotally secured to the jaws, whereby movement of the plunger will cause the jaws to turn upon their pivot.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH A. SOHAN N O.
