Description

J. W. WOOD.
BIT STOCK.
APPLICATION HLED JULY 26.1911.

JUSTICE W. WOOD, 0F HIGHLAND PARK, MICHIGAN.
BIT-STOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filedv July 26. 1917. Serial No. 182,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josrion W. \Voon, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit-Stocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a bit stock.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, practical and efficient adjustable bit stock of strong, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction adapted to be operated by a plurality of short oscillatory movements to enable screws to be inserted in spaces which will not permit of the use of an ordinary bit stock.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bit stock of this character adapted to enable considerable power to be applied and capable of easy ratchet operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bit stock constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of a portion of the stock or handle.
Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the device.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the bit stock comprises in its construction a stock or bar 1 designed to be con structed of any suitable material and provided at the outer end with a laterally eX- tending arm 2 having a fiat end face 3 and provided with a central opening 4; counterurging bored at 5 to receive a coiled spring 6 for a chuck or tool 7 outwardly to disengage it from the stock or handle. The chuck is provided with a cylindrical head 8 having an annular series of cylindrical sockets 9 adapted to be engaged by diametrically disposed projecting studs 10 formed by pins 11 which are secured in sockets 12 of the arm of the stock or bar.
The head of the bit stock is provided with a central threaded opening 13 to receive a threaded end 1 1 of a rod or screw 15 which extends through the opening 1 of the arm of the stock or bar and which has its rear end 16 threaded for the reception of a nut 17. The studs 10 project from the end face 3 of the laterally extending arm 2 and they are adapted to engage any set or pair of the openings 9 or sockets of the head of the chuck bearing a tool. The spring, which is interposed between the head of the rotary tool element and the inner end wall of the counterbore, is adapted to disengage the studs from the sockets of the tool member when lateral pressure on the stock or bar is removed.
In the operation of the bit stock the nut 17 is run back far enough to enable the spring to disengage the studs from the sockets of the tool element 7 The tool element may then be engaged with a screw and the handle turned to the most convenient position for impartin rotary move-- ment to the tool element. The bar or handle is then moved inwardly toward the head of the tool element to engage the studs with a pair of sockets of the chuck which is then partially rotated. The studs are held by lateral pressure on the handle or bar in engagement with the head of the chuck and, when it is desired to swing the handle or bar backward for another stroke or operation, the lateral pressure is removed from the handle or bar and the spring forces the handle or bar away from the chuck to disengage the pins from the sockets. This will enable the handle or bar to be partially rotated in a reverse direction and the lateral pressure is applied to the bar or handle to reengage the pins with the sockets. By this operation the chuck and tool may be readily rotated and considerable power may be applied owing to the great strength of the construction. The rotary chuck may carry a screw driver or other form of tool operable by a rotary movement of the character set forth. The rotary chuck and the pins and other parts may be constructed of a suitable material to adapt them for the character of use to which the device is to be put. Also the device is adapted to save time and labor in operating on screws of a character requiring such a tool.
hat is claimed is:
1. A tool of the class described including a bar or lever having a flat side face at one end and provided thereat With a projection,
said bar or lever being also provided at the said fiat face with a transverse opening, a rotary tool member presenting a flat end face to the said side face of the bar or lever and provided at such flat end face With an annular series of sockets, a rod extending through the transverse opening of the bar or lever and centrally secured to the end face of the tool member and forming a pivot for the same to permit the stud to engage the sockets of the said tool member, means for automatically urging the tool member away from the bar or lever, and means connected with tl e rod and arranged at the back of the bar or lever for drawing the said rod inwardly to maintain the tool member in tight interlocked relation With the said bar or lever.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five 2. A tool of the class described including a bar or lever provided at one end With a laterally projecting arm presenting a flat end face, said bar or lever being provided With an opening extending transversely through the saidrbar or lever and the arm thereof, studs projecting from the fiat face of the arm at opposite sides of the said opening, the latter being counterbored at the said arm, a rotary tool member having a head presenting a flat face to the flat face of the arm and provided With an annular series of sockets arranged to be engaged by the said studs, a rod threaded into the head of the tool centrally of theseries of sockets ant extending through the transverse opening and having a threaded rear end, a spring mounted in the counter-bore and disposed on the rod and arranged to urge the head outwardly, and a nut mounted on the threaded rear end of the rod and arranged to draw the head into tight interlocked engagement With the studs. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
